Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the Director of Cultural Centers, the Assistant Director for the Cultural Centers (CC) will foster campus-wide awareness, knowledge, and skills around inclusion and equity, and create a supportive and inclusive campus environment for a diverse student body. The Assistant Director will work with the Director in achieving the Cultural Centers' mission to engage multiple identities of all students, support leaders to be change agents for social justice, build alliances with students, create a community that honors and values diversity, and raise awareness about racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic issues. The Assistant Director will oversee the creation of programs in the Intercultural Center that integrate critical thought, cultural awareness, and solidarity building. The Assistant Director will be responsible for partnering with various Student Life and academic departments on Intercultural Center (IC) signature events and related issues, and directly supervising a graduate student intern and the work of undergraduate student interns.
As a member of the larger staff in Student Life, the Assistant Director for the Cultural Centers collaborates and cooperates to create leadership and intercultural competence opportunities to support student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. The mission of Student Life is to fully support holistic student development within a social justice framework, centered in preparing students to be caring, socially responsible citizens in our global and local community.
Full Job Description:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Cultural Centers Programming
  • Oversee the development and implementation of Intercultural Center-based programs which include undergraduate-developed and facilitated programs, graduate-developed programs, and those developed by themselves for the department.
  • Support logistical university requirements for the program planning process, including performer arrangements, room reservations, and calendaring.
  • Evaluate Intercultural Center programs that facilitate exploration of the multiple identities of all students and support the University's Vision, Mission, and Values and divisional commitments.
  • Supervise graduate intern for the Intercultural Center and oversee the work of the undergraduate interns for the Intercultural Center.
  • Coordinate an End of Year Ceremony (cultural commencements) to honor the achievements of our various communities. This includes managing collaborations with other departments, chairing the committees, managing logistics and communication, and acting as liaison to the graduates and their families.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate seminars or workshops to the campus community to foster inclusiveness, equity, social justice and increase awareness of diversity issues.
Cultural Centers Operations
  • Supervise, manage the daily workflow of, and provide professional development for the Intercultural Center student interns and graduate intern. Manage volunteers, as needed.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Intercultural Center, including front and back office operations, student, staff and faculty inquiries, and space management. Co-create and revise processes and procedures for the Cultural Centers that affect the accomplishment of the mission of the department.
  • Monitor budget items for Intercultural Center purchases, including open commitments and fund transfers, and Intercultural Center student intern payments.
  • Participate in the development of the Cultural Centers' Formation training process for new undergraduate and graduate interns.
  • Co-lead the recruitment and selection process of undergraduate student interns.
  • Participate in the selection process for graduate student interns.
  • Co-coordinate logistics for workshop sessions, including communications, Canvas courses, accessibility planning and arrangements.
  • Co-create the Cultural Centers weekly newsletter in collaboration with the Career Staff of the Cultural Centers and manage marketing for Intercultural Center programming in other campus newsletters and calendars.
  • Monitor the Cultural Centers' online presence through social media resources such as Instagram, Twitter, and websites as they relate to Intercultural Center programs and services.
  • Participate in communications and correspondence on behalf of the department, including campus-wide communications and routine correspondence that may include sensitive and/or confidential information.
Student Advising
  • Build coalitions, collaborate, and work closely with culturally-focused clubs, campus departments, and faculty to coordinate, implement, and publicize programs around social justice, identity, identity development, and other related events.
  • Provide general advisement, advocacy for, and referrals to campus resources for individual students and student organizations connected to Cultural Centers' programs and services as appropriate.
  • Mediate conflict with/among individual students and student organizations as appropriate.
Campus Resources
  • Serve as an advocate for students and represent the Cultural Centers on committees, task forces, and boards as requested by the Director of Cultural Centers.
  • Serve as a resource for USF programs and departments and work with staff and faculty directly involved in supporting historically underrepresented and underserved students, including faculty-staff associations, the Diversity Equity and Inclusion committee, Student Disability Services, residential living/learning communities, International Student and Scholar Services, Admissions, and Student Leadership and Engagement
  • Assist with coordination of retention activities for historically underrepresented students, in collaboration with other departments/programs including the Center for Academic and Student Achievement, PACT, Muscat Scholars Program, and International Student and Scholar Services.
Other Responsibilities
  • Participate in department/division activities including meetings, retreats, and staff development.
  • Collaborate with professional colleagues at other university and educational organizations to share information for the purpose of enhancing content and delivery of CC programs, services, and resources to students.
  • Strive to keep general knowledge and awareness of pedagogical strategies for engaging diversity issues through critical self-education and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in higher education administration, college student services administration, counseling, sociology, ethnic studies, women's studies, gender studies or other related field and one to two years of multicultural programming experience required.
  • Specific experience in providing direct services to historically underrepresented and LGBTQ students in an urban, multicultural environment preferred.
  • Candidate must be able to work closely with faculty and staff to incorporate curricular and co-curricular elements in program and service development.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills in facilitating and maintaining collaborative relationships with campus constituencies.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills.
  • Publishing and website design is a plus.
  • Must be available to participate in evening and weekend activities and programs.
