University of Rochester is Hiring an Occupational Safety Specialist Near Rochester, NY

Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Occupational Safety Specialist implements, manages, and monitors safety programs, policies and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. Evaluates the University's procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safe guards and solutions. Ensure compliance with all current safety regulations. Works independently to promote the Occupational Safety Unit's overall mission by evaluating and minimizing risk associated with the University of Rochester operations including but not limited to the Hospital, Medical Center and River Campus
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and Construction Safety: Works with Facilities and Planning/Project Management projects, tasks, activities. Attends and participates in maintenance, demolition, construction, and renovation reviews. Reviews project drawings and submissions to identify EHS concerns or issues. Participates in pre-project walkthroughs and occasional projects in progress to identify safety issues and compliance.
  • Compliance Programs: Responsible for all support and development of Safety related programs and Regulations such as but not limited to LockOut/TagOut, Electrical Safety, Personal Protective Equipment, Fall Protections, Blood Borne Pathogens, Machine Guarding.
  • Reviews corrective actions taken after employee injuries/incidents: Follows-up with University Managers and Supervisors to review employee injuries and incidents to ensure adequate corrective actions have taken place to mitigate future risk. Assists the Managers and Supervisors in documenting the corrective actions through a web-based application. Leads Root Cause Analysis reviews for all significant injuries, illnesses, and near misses. Utilizes the Safety Management System to monitor data and injury statistics and report out as needed.
  • Training: Provides and/or makes provisions for physical safety training and online training such as, but not limited to, aerial lifts, machine guarding, confined space, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, fall protection, BBP, ladder or lift safety, walking working surfaces, job hazard analysis.
  • Participates in and leads committees such as BBP, Slip, Trip, and Fall; Environment of Care Council and others as required. Participates on University's Spill Team and other emergency response teams as part of EH&S, may be called in at any time 24/7 as needed.
  • Liaisons with Regulators such as OSHA, DOH etc. as well as participates in program and nonscheduled inspections by regulators.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or other physical Science, Safety Technology, or equivalent work-related experience required. Minimum of 3-5 years of related experience in an academic, industrial or hospital environment performing hazard assessments, safety inspection, or managing safety programs required. Required knowledge, skills and abilities: Ability to work independently or in a team environment; Ability to use the Microsoft Office suite; Strong organizational skills and excellent oral and written communication skills; Able to interact on a professional level with the University community, including faculty, staff, Principal Investigators and medical professionals; Must have own transportation with current registration and valid driver's license; Ability to wear respiratory protection; Be available for emergency response as part of EH&S Spill Team. Ability to become a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) required; Required to maintain Professional Development and Certifications (if applicable).

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 68,400 - $102,600 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined byconsidering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
