University of Rochester is Hiring a Laboratory Safety Specialist Near Rochester, NY

Responsibilities

Duties:

  • Research Laser Safety Officer – Serves as Laser Safety Officer for all research lasers at the University. Oversees and implements the Research Laser Safety Program including all safety controls for all class 3B and 4 lasers. Holds the inventory of all class 3B or 4 lasers. Inspects all new laser installations for controls and PPE. Updates all documents associated with the Research Laser Safety Program including all forms, inspection checklists, and operating procedures.
  • Laboratory Inspection Program - Independently conducts inspections, audits and surveys of varied clinical, instrumental, research, microbiological, laser, and student laboratories for analyzing safety of laboratory setups and procedures, and for assessing compliance with Federal, State, Local, and University regulations and generally accepted laboratory safety practices.
  • Laboratory Reports – Prepares detailed reports about inspection deficiencies and explains findings and significance to Principal Investigators and lab supervisors. Makes recommendations for corrective actions. Ensures accurate reporting and data collection in EH&S databases
  • Maintaining Departmental Documents – Writes and edits Standard Operating Procedures for departmental functions, technical instruments, assists with writing and editing the quarterly Laboratory Safety Newsletter and aids in the periodic updates of the Unit webpages
  • Recertification of Chemical Fume Hoods - Performs the annual re-certification and verification of the University’s Chemical Fume Hoods within the Medical Center. Maintains these annual records for the chemical fume hoods in an electronic database.
  • Incident Follow-up -Follows up on reported injuries and near misses involving chemical and physical hazards throughout the University.
  • Laboratory Decommissioning - Verifies laboratory spaces have been adequately cleaned prior to new occupancy or renovation by contractors. Reports findings to University Space Management, Planning and Project Management, and the laboratory’s department.
  • Risk Assessment / Chemical Monitoring - Conducts hazard assessments for chemical and physical hazards present in the laboratory and determines the appropriate actions to minimize those hazards. When necessary, initiate chemical monitoring and report the findings of the risk assessment and the chemical monitoring.
  • Emergency Response - Responds to emergency spill calls during regular hours for any needed clean-up activities as lead by the University’s Spill Team and the Environmental Compliance Unit. Assists in maintain spill supplies in the 4 EH&S Spill Response Rooms.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Required minimum education - Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Optics, Physics, Safety Technology, Environmental Management Technology, or the Physical Sciences provided extensive courses in chemistry have been taken.

Experience required - 1-2 years’ experience with class 3B or 4 Lasers, or prior experience as a Laser Safety Officer.

Knowledge of laser and laboratory health and safety topics. Must be able to work independently with limited direction. Must have own transportation with current registration and valid driver's license. Ability to sit/stand/walk for considerable lengths of time. Have ability to wear respiratory protection

Professional certification preferred (LSO, ASP, CSP, OHST) or ability to obtain certification within 2 years.
