Job Description Summary
The Epstein lab at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Research Specialist C/D to support, contribute to, and manage various ongoing projects. The Epstein Lab broadly studies molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular
development and stem cell biology, and the implications for human disease Multiple model systems, including human cells and tissues and mice are used. These diverse areas of research call for distinct skill sets and knowledge bases, thus necessitating the need for a highly skilled technician to provide broad support while also conducting general laboratory maintenance.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; personal initiative, and ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities; ability to take responsibility and meet deadlines and initiate tasks without close supervision; and an ability to collaborate effectively and work well in teams.
The position is contingent upon funding
Job Description
Research Specialist C
Plans and conducts laboratory experiments to meet research project objectives at the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI). These experiments may include cell culture, mouse husbandry, behavior experiments, and
tissue collection, general molecular biology, and genomic sequencing. Oversees general management of laboratory reagents, ordering, receiving, safety protocols, equipment maintenance, and lab research animals.
Writes and maintains IACUC protocols for mouse research projects. Closely collaborates with lab members in all developmental and disease areas of research. Adapts existing techniques and develops new techniques with PI
and senior scientists on experimental aims in accordance to established protocols. Helps train new lab personnel in experimental protocols and techniques.
Qualifications for C
Bachelor's Degree with 3-5 years of related experience in lab research, project and people management or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Prior experience with rodent handling and colony management is preferred.
Research Specialist D
Works independently to initiate, contribute to, and manage the development of multiple projects, and experimental protocols at direction of Principal Investigator. Designs and conducts research, performs qualitative and quantitative data analyses, manuscript preparation, as well as other tasks as assigned by the PI. Develops manuscripts and helps to prepare grant applications for funding opportunities. Responsible for training and supervising staff, while effectively interfacing with existing postdoctoral researchers and students in the laboratory. Oversees general lab management, including ordering and receiving, safety protocols, equipment maintenance, and lab research animals. Close partnership with Principal Investigator to ensure success of all research studies. Prior experience with rodent handling and colony management is required.
Qualifications for D
Master's Degree with 3-5 years of related experience in lab research, project and people management or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Strong organizational, verbal, and writing skills are required. Prior experience with rodent handling and colony management is required.
