Job Description Summary
The Assistant Director of Youth and Visitor Education is an integral part of the Education Department at the Morris Arboretum. This role is critical in developing and implementing programming that meets Morris Arboretum's mission of educating youth and families of surrounding communities about the important role plants play in their lives, and to inspire joy and wonder in the natural world.
This position leads a team of several part-time staff, a 9-month intern and volunteers and is responsible for guiding this team through the development and implementation of formal and informal education opportunities. These opportunities include but are not limited to visitor/family programming, school tours, and summer programming. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic proponent of the Arboretum's mission and vision and work to ensure Morris is a place of learning and inspiration for all.
This position is responsible for the evaluation of current programming, developing and implementing new content and delivery methods that are engaging, fun and meet academic standards. The successful candidate will be dedicated to inclusive and welcoming programs for all members of surrounding communities and continually seek improvement in these efforts.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
Evaluate all youth and visitor programming content and delivery methods to ensure the Arboretum is at the forefront of how cultural institutions engage with their visitors and students. This includes activities like Fairy Woods, visitor engagement activities, school tours, summer programs, and adult group tours.
Provide leadership to youth and visitor education team including Administrative Assistant, Summer Programs Manager, School Outreach Coordinator and 9-month intern. This includes hiring, managing, and evaluating staff.
Create and maintain goals and metrics that are essential for advancing the quality of programming, as well as expressing progress to Director of Education, Arboretum Senior team, the Advisory Board and other stakeholders.
Engage with education and marketing teams to develop and create engaging interpretive materials for events, exhibits, and seasonal Arboretum highlights. This includes permanent and ephemeral signs, scavenger hunts, and other virtual/print materials as needed.
Direct and manage, with the Administrative Assistant, the daily calendar of volunteer docents and archivists. Docents provide daily general tours, and tours for schools and groups.
Take a leadership role in the monthly program planning team which does short- and long-range planning for events and exhibits.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Education, Environmental Education or a related field.
3 to 5 years' experience managing a youth education program in a supervisory role, with budget responsibility, and proven experience as an effective manager and leader.
Experience managing volunteers and volunteer-led programming.
Experience evaluating and designing youth and visitor programming that is engaging, welcoming, and content rich.
Experience navigating multiple projects, competing timelines and the demands of an institution that needs to navigate day to days shifts in schedules when dealing with the elements and the natural world.
