Job Description Summary
The purpose of this position is to enable the Executive Director for ULAR and the Director for Husbandry Operations to implement necessary projects and initiatives in a timely manner, supporting his/her objectives and goals. Support services provided by ULAR are critical to the research communities at universities. It is necessary to update policies, procure products, and improve operational efficiency across all vivaria in conjunction with the new Associate Vice Provost for Research and Executive Director of University Laboratory Animal Resources. Under the direction of the Director of Husbandry Operations, this position ensures the consistency of program operations across the entire ULAR entity, staff, Upenn entities, vendors, and research community. In addition, this position will be responsible for overseeing the ULAR Husbandry program's implementation and completion.
ULAR provides essential 24/7 services for the University of Pennsylvania. The Assistant Director Husbandry Operations position is designated as "essential" and you are expected to work when normal campus operations are suspended (e.g.: inclement weather) or if there is an emergency impacting ULAR. In addition, you may be expected to work outside of your regular schedule during peak activity periods (e.g.: overtime, weekends). To the extent possible, managers will provide timely notice of modified work schedules.
Job Description
Principal Position Responsibilities/Duties:
Ensures timely follow-through and resolution of routine problems, issues, and customer service concerns with husbandry and investigator personnel.
Monitor and track routine maintenance items at Penn Facilities and ensure they are entered into the maintenance log and kept current.
Track and monitor facility ancillary equipment maintenance and repairs.
Active role with upgrades to Victory in collaboration with the Associate Director for Husbandry Operations.
CHARMS admin
Workday (Monitor attendance and performance)
Coordinate and validate annual water testing
Husbandry CENSUS admin
Husbandry SOP admin including SOP changes
Facility signage
Coordinate quarantine and outbreak response in collaboration with Diagnostics
Special Projects as assigned
Coordinate with key stakeholders
Monitor project progress
Implementation follow through
Husbandry point of contact to OAW, including incident reporting
Follow through on reported animal welfare issues.
Special trainings
Semiannual scheduling contact
AAALAC facility scheduling
Assume the role of functional manager in the absence of the manager
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
Graduation from a vocational or technical school plus 5-7 years related experience or equivalent combination of education & experience
Minimum AALAS certification at the LAT level required, with certification at the LATG level preferred.
Experience managing a laboratory animal facilities or equivalent experience
Demonstrated supervisory knowledge, including motivational techniques and professional development/training methods
Demonstrated program management knowledge including basic statistical methods, budget development and oversight, and knowledge of local, state and federal regulations for the workplace
Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to helping others reach their full potential
Ability to work in an emotionally taxing field - a positive attitude and sense of humor are essential
Willingness to work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends
