Position Summary

The University of New Mexico NM INSPIRES (New Mexico Integrative Science Program Incorporating Research in Environmental Sciences) Center invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellow for its Community Engagement Core, housed at the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico, to begin in August 2024. This is a full-time position with a specialization in Environmental Health and Community Engagement. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in communication, environmental health, public health, sociology, or a related field by date of appointment. NM INSPIRES is a new National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Environmental Health Sciences Core Center (1P30ES032755). The selected Post-Doctoral Fellow candidate will join the Community Engagement Core (CEC) team under the leadership of Dr. Tamar Ginossar. They will lead, as well as participate in existing and new community engagement research and partnerships working with diverse Southwestern communities and scientists on environmental health topics, including community-based participatory projects to advance environmental justice.

Applications must have demonstrated experience or interest and potential in research and community engagement.

Job duties will include, but are not limited to, supporting community-engaged research on environmental health justice using a social scientific approach, collecting and analyzing qualitative and/or quantitative data, conducting reviews of the literature on related topics, publishing papers, participating in community-engaged teams to advance environmental health and reduce inequities, co-creating curriculum to diverse audiences, including students, on environmental health-related topics, and co-creating communication materials and messages at appropriate health literacy rate that meets’ communities’ information needs. In addition to these job duties, it is expected that the Post-Doctoral Fellow will partner with the CEC lead Dr. Ginossar to publish results in relevant peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

a)Ph.D. in Environmental Health, Anthropology, Communication, Community-Planning, Geography, Education, Life Sciences, Public Health, Psychology, and Sociology, or closely related field completed by date of application.

Preferred Qualifications

a.A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities as evidenced by cover-letter.

b.A demonstrated record of social scientific research including in-depth review of literature as evidenced by CV and a sample of 2-3 academic writing (2-3 published articles, conference papers or dissertation chapters)

c.Strong record, or potential for publications in the area of environmental health as evidenced by CV, A demonstrated background or interest in community engagement as evidenced by CV or cover letter or sample publications.

d.Ability or interest in designing communication materials, as evidenced in CV, cover letter, or sample communication/educational materials.

e.Ability or interest in designing and applying educational curriculum related to environmental health topics to diverse audiences, as evidenced in CV, Cover letter, or sample communication/educational materials.

f.Interest in environmental justice as evidenced by CV or cover letter.

g.Organizational skills and ability to be detailed oriented as evidenced by CV, cover letter, or sample of a sample of 2-3 academic writing (2-3 published articles, conference papers or dissertation chapters)

h.Spanish Speaking, as evidenced in CV or cover letter.

i.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse stakeholders as evidenced by CV or cover letter.
