Summary

The Department of Psychiatry is seeking an experienced Research Specialist to support NIH and VA funded research projects focusing on suicide prevention. The studies are conducted in inpatient psychiatric settings at Michigan Medicine and the Ann Arbor VA hospitals and will be conducted through 2029. The NIH funded study will involve interviews with adults hospitalized following a suicide attempt to identify warning signs for suicide attempts. The VA trial will test the effectiveness of a brief therapeutic intervention for reducing suicide risk following hospital discharge.

In this role, you'll support the the Principal Investigator (PI) by developing study protocols and materials, hiring, training, and supervising other research staff, ensuring regulatory compliance for this work, and helping share the knowledge generated by assisting in the creation of manuscripts, progress reports, and other publications. You will work in an exciting environment which provides support for professional growth activities, opportunities to connect and collaborate with other project managers and research teams within the University of Michigan and the VA, and potential opportunities to submit and present at professional conferences in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and research team. Responsibilities*

Your responsibilities in this position would include, but are not limited to:

  • providing oversight and support to two federally funded multi-site studies of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. You'll be responsible for the development of study protocols, intervention materials, and design of data capture.
  • serving as the primary liaison between sites to answer questions, provide information, and obtain appropriate information regarding project activities, including adhering to approved protocols, maintaining project timelines, and upholding research activities that are aligned with regulatory approvals.
  • hiring, training, oversight, and evaluation of research staff.
  • managing and overseeing regulatory compliance, IRB amendments and submissions, sponsor communication, participant recruitment and study visits, and electronic data capture and reporting.
  • coordinate the submission of research proposals and help prepare working papers, manuscripts, and reports.
  • conduct fidelity reviews
  • assist with coverage of research activities as needed, such as participant recruitment, risk assessment, and data collection.
  • other administrative duties as needed.

Required Qualifications*

To be considered for this position at the Research Area Specialist Senior level, all applicants must:

  • Have a bachelor's degree
  • have five or more years of previous research experience.

To be considered for this position at the Research Area Specialist Intermediate level, all applicants must:

  • have a bachelor's degree
  • have four or more years of previous research experience.

Desired Qualifications*

  • A Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, or a similar field is highly desirable.
  • Experience with high-risk populations/topics (e.g. suicide, mental health, etc.) and an understanding of HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Clinical or Clinical Research experience, or licensure as a mental health professional
  • Previous study coordination or lab management experience.
  • Training an supervisory experience.
  • Experience interviewing participants.
  • Experience working with REDCap for data processing and management.
