Main Function:

The Surgical First Assistant renders patient care by assisting the surgeon during operative procedures. The Assistant functions under the direction of the operating surgeon during the patient’s surgical experience. The Assistant provides support to the surgeon by assisting with exposure and visualization, hemostasis, wound closure and other technical functions that will help assure a safe surgical procedure. The Assistant performs other related tasks under the direction of the Circulating Nurse and reports to the Clinical Manager of the Operating Room.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assists with the safe transportation of the patient to an individual operating suite, to PACU or Nursing Unit as directed.
• Assists with maintaining current physician and procedural reference data.
• Consistently performs surgical assisting functions with efficiency, while following applicable standards, policies and procedures.
• Assists with patient positioning, insertion of a foley, the skin prep and the draping of the patient as directed by the surgeon and/or the circulating nurse.
• Assures the patient’s skin integrity is maintaining by minimizing the pressure put on the patient via instruments places around the operative site and by pressure from personnel leaning on the patient.

Education

: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificates. Evidence of successful completion of an approved First Assist training program. Certification preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of First Assist experience required. Positive interpersonal and communication skills. Computer experience preferable.
