Main Function:
The Surgical First Assistant renders patient care by assisting the surgeon during operative procedures. The Assistant functions under the direction of the operating surgeon during the patient’s surgical experience. The Assistant provides support to the surgeon by assisting with exposure and visualization, hemostasis, wound closure and other technical functions that will help assure a safe surgical procedure. The Assistant performs other related tasks under the direction of the Circulating Nurse and reports to the Clinical Manager of the Operating Room.

Education
: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificates. Evidence of successful completion of an approved First Assist training program. Certification preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 1 year of First Assist experience required. Positive interpersonal and communication skills. Computer experience preferable.

Physician, supervisors, clinical managers, occasional department heads, employees in other departments, public at large.
Physical Demands
: Endure considerable walking, long periods of standing and frequently fluctuating activities.
Working Conditions:
Well-lighted and well-ventilated hospital environment.
Hazards:
Exposure to all types of illnesses, disturbed patients and environmental hazards including contact with body fluids potentially infectious for bloodborne pathogens, Possibility of minor injury from equipment and injury or strains from moving patients and/or irrational patients.
