University of Maryland, Batlimore is Hiring a Prince George's County School Mental Health Counselor OR Senior Counselor (Sign On Bonus) Near Baltimore, MD

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Department of Psychiatry (Child and Adolescent Division) has a full-time opening within its Prince George's School Mental Health Initiative Program for a Counselor or a Senior Counselor dependent upon the chosen candidate's qualifications. The University of Maryland, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, National Center for School Mental Health Counselor position would provide a full continuum of mental health services and consultation to youth with severe behavioral and emotional challenges who are enrolled in Prince George's County Public Schools. The individual would provide a broad range of clinical services including: 1) assessments and evaluation, 2) individual, group, and family therapy, 3) crisis intervention, 4) teacher consultations, and 5) school-wide education and training regarding mental health issues. The primary duty of the position is to provide direct clinical services and school-based consultations, including clinical diagnosis and treatment plans, individual and group therapy, consultation with school staff, and professional development at the school site. The counselor is also responsible for maintaining patient records and completing other required paperwork. The counselor will provide counseling services in a school in Prince George's County.

The selected candidate for this position is eligible for a sign-on bonus totaling a minimum of $3,000. Half of the bonus is payable within the first 30 days of hire and the remaining half is payable after successful completion of 12-month probationary period. The sign on bonus is eligible only to candidates new or returning to UMB.

Essential Functions

COUNSELOR

* The Counselor works under the supervision of a licensed professional and assist individuals and/or groups in identifying, understanding and decreasing the impact of social, emotional and environmental factors associated with illness, through the provision of a broad variety of direct social services and programs. Work under the supervision of a LCSW-C or LCPC when any care provision is involved.

* Assess risk by screening and interviewing patients. Identify psychosocial condition and needs and determine the best course of therapeutic treatment.

* Evaluate, refer and counsel individuals, families or groups to assess needs and address issues.

* Provide preventative, protective, or supportive services to individuals or groups who are in or threatened by situations detrimental to their well-being or that of the community.

* Development of treatment plans for a variety of patient issues.

* Perform chart reviews and generates note on evaluations, therapy sessions, reports and other accountability measures.

* Consult with and work collaboratively with case manager, other therapists, community partners, educators, and if applicable, researchers.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

SENIOR COUNSELOR

* Perform all duties of the Counselor including:

* Senior Counselors work independently with individuals, couples, families, and other groups to help them to manage and overcome a range of psychological and emotional issues. With the client as a participant, senior counselors use individualized treatment plans and a variety evidence-based practices and programs to help process and address feelings, and behaviors; assists with helping consumers to achieve social-emotional-behavioral success and well-being. Must work under supervision of LCSW-C or LCPC if working independently when any care provision is involved.

* Provide training, guidance, and support to colleagues who are not fully licensed as mental health providers (e.g., LMSW/LGPC, graduate trainees).

* May supervise other counselors, interns, students, or employees per licensure.

* Assist in development of policies, protocols, or procedures as requested.

* May be responsible for review and submission of authorized documentation for reimbursement per licensure.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Counselor

Education: Master's degree in Social Work or Psychology.

Experience: Prior professional or field experience related to mental health services or programming is preferred. Experience providing services to youth with disabilities in a school setting are highly desirable.

Certification/Licensure: Licensed Master Social Work - (LMSW) or Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) in the State of Maryland.

Other: No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement.

Senior Counselor

Education: Master's degree in Social Work or Psychology.

Experience: One (1) year of post-licensure (LCSW, LCSW-C, or LCPC) experience in related area of treatment including responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others. Prior professional or field experience related to mental health services or programming is preferred. Experience providing services to youth with disabilities in a school setting are highly desirable.

Certification/Licensure: State of Maryland licensure as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Certified Social Worker - Clinical (LCSW-C).

Other: No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Possess knowledge of best practices in the field as well as relevant federal, state, and local rules, regulations, and programs/policies related to children's mental health. Ability to perform position in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws. Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences. Assumes personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learns how to effectively use technology. Maintains productivity and uses knowledge strategies to increase knowledge base. Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for resolving problems and facilitating decision-making processes.

* Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding. Ability to maintain confidentiality of client information in accordance with professional standards, HIPAA (Health Information Portability & Accountability Act) and to understand implications of FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) and state regulations. Ability to effectively interact with a diverse client or patient population using best practices in clinical or interviewing techniques and consultative approaches.

* Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.

* Strong interpersonal skills.

* Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for resolving problems and facilitating decision making processes.

* Demonstrate excellent organizational skills.

* Ability to work independently, interface with school staff and other professionals, and provide high quality care in a fast-paced environment.

* Knowledge of the school system is preferred.

The Hiring Range for the Counselor is high $50,000s to low $60,000s, commensurate with education and experience.

The Hiring Range for the Senior Counselor is high $60,000s to low $70,000s, commensurate with education and experience.
