University of Maryland Baltimore County is Hiring a Laboratory Research Technician Near Baltimore, MD

Position Overview:

The LeGates lab is seeking a highly motivated Laboratory Research Technician to assist in the development of projects focused on determining how synaptic plasticity in specific neuronal circuits mediate motivated behavior.

The LeGates lab uses whole-cell electrophysiology, optogenetics, fiber-photometry and behavior, in conjunction with several other cellular/molecular biology techniques, to measure and manipulate neuronal circuit function and understand its impact on motivated behaviors.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Conduct or assist with experiments
  • Support the lab technicians with the care of mice colony that encompasses tests that will be conducted in the lab as well as maintaining a log and organization of mice
  • Perform basic lab tasks (e.g., making reagents, molecular biology, etc.) to maintain the upkeep of the lab
  • Participate in group lab meetings
  • Assist with lab supply purchasing and administrative duties
  • Supervise undergraduate students
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Biological or Chemical Science
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences; of the safe and proper handling and disposal of applicable specimens, materials and equipment. Ability to perform laboratory procedures using applicable equipment and techniques; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to use computers and related software applications; to lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the full performance of the work may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least one year of research experience in a laboratory setting
  • Previous experience working with mice is preferred but not required
