Description

To provide and assist in the immediate protection and security of students, faculty, and staff in various campus buildings and / or property within the University community by enforcing the policies and procedures set by the University, state, and local laws.

This position is responsible for coordinating all activities on their assigned shift. The Sergeant is responsible for all the field operations and activities.

The Sergeant is responsible for the review of all UIR incident reports before they are submitted for administrative review.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  • Issues officer's assignments in the field.
  • Supervise activities of the Corporals, officers, and dispatchers.
  • Reviews all written reports by shift officers before they are submitted for administrative review.
  • Assigns officers to Community Patrol.
  • Assures that direct patrol tactics are being maintained campus wide to include academic buildings, administrative buildings and walk-throughs of resident halls.
  • Responsible for reporting to the administrative staff any changes that may occur from the posted GOOGLE work schedule.
  • Ensures that appropriate safety inspections of fire protection equipment, emergency lighting, etc., are performed and completed in the established time frame and in accordance with applicable state and local codes and University policy.
  • Contacts appropriate University personnel in the event of an emergency or serious crisis situation.
  • Responsible for promptly reporting to the Chief / Deputy Chief / Lieutenant of Campus Safety and Security any incidents or actions of officers on the assigned shift.
  • Understands and carries out emergency or special events procedures in conjunction with other University personnel.
  • Handles timely and tense situations in a professional manner according to departmental guidelines.
  • Provides liaison and coordination with outside emergency services ( police, fire and EMS units).
  • Ensures the immediate response to fire alarms, initiating proper evacuation of building occupants, and the identification of the cause.

Resets alarms and ensures ready status of alarm systems as necessary.

Ensures parking areas are patrolled and enforcement of campus parking regulations is followed, issuing citations as needed.

Ensures fire lanes remain clear and initiates actions necessary to remedy parking infractions in accordance with University policy.

  • Provides and ensures that all requested escorts are completed in a timely manner.
  • Provides access to buildings when requested and verifies that such access is authorized.
  • Maintains a thorough working knowledge of the campus including its topography, buildings, streets, persons and / or organizations.
  • Assists in the training of new officers assigned to the shift and in the ongoing training of all shift personnel.
  • Provides relief at the Information Center.
  • Responsible for securing campus buildings on the assigned shift. Patrols and completes security checks of assigned buildings and grounds, including exterior / interior doors, windows, and essential buildings equipment such as heating and air conditioning systems, etc.
  • Contacts appropriate Physical Plant personnel, if necessary, to respond to emergency repairs.
  • Observes and promptly reports all safety hazards for immediate correction by proper Lynchburg University staff.
  • Performs any other work-related duties as required.

    ORAL OR WRITTEN REQUIREMENTS :

    Must have the ability to communicate effectively and have good English-language skills for writing daily, weekly, and monthly reports.

    Must be able to read and interpret printed information. Good mathematical skills for performance of daily responsibilities.

    Must be able to remain calm in emergency situations and communicate with proper authorities. The ability to recall events for completing reports, testifying in court, and presenting evidence at University hearing boards as required.

    A working knowledge of computer skills is required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Tasks require the ability to stand, walk, and continuously perform essential job functions for an 8 / 12 hour shift, with two fifteen-minute breaks.

    Work a 40- hour week, some overtime may be required. Shift assignments may be subject to change. Must have the ability to lift or otherwise maneuver heavy materials weighing a minimum of 50 pounds.

    Tasks require frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus, often in adverse weather conditions.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE :

    Experience in law enforcement, military or other security fields of work.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION :

    High school diploma or equivalent education that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties of this position.

    Emergency medical (EMT), CPR and AED is preferred. Supervisory experience is also preferred.
