University of Kansas is Hiring a Student Success Coordinator Near Lawrence, KS

Position Overview

TRIO SES & STEM are federally funded projects through the US Department of Education TRIO Student Support Services Program. TRIO SES & STEM offer comprehensive, personalized support services to eligible KU undergraduate students, helping students achieve academic success and graduate with a bachelor’s degree. Program participants are first-generation college students, students with high financial need, and students with disabilities/chronic conditions. The Student Program Coordinator position provides proactive, holistic advising and coordination of support services for 100 program participants. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in higher education.
Candidates selected for interview will be required to give a presentation to program staff, students, and campus partners on a relevant topic related to the mission of the program.

Job Description

Student Support – 75%
  • Maintain a caseload of 100 students and provide proactive, holistic advising in areas of college transition, academic counseling, career counseling, financial aid/literacy, graduate/professional school preparation, campus involvement, health/wellness, and personal advocacy.
  • Conduct welcome intake meetings and regularly scheduled individual meetings with all assigned program participants following a semester calendar.
  • Design an individualized academic support plan and monitor progress toward accomplishment of semester goals.
  • Serve as an advocate for program students with KU faculty, staff, and administrators and be a well-informed liaison and referral source for other campus programs and community resources that may benefit program participants.
Documentation – 10%
  • Establish and maintain online individual files for each assigned student including program application, eligibility determination, needs assessment, program agreement, and other paperwork documenting federal eligibility and services provided. Accurately enter student information and a summary of each student contact into the TRIO database. Compile, submit, and analyze data assigned by the Director/Associate Director to assist with evaluations of program effectiveness and U.S. Department of Education annual reporting requirements.
TRIO Programming and Campus Collaboration – 10%
  • Assist with coordination of one or more of the following TRIO program components: UNIV 101 (TRIO section), Hixson Scholars Support, Fostering Jayhawk Success, Academic Honors Recognition, TRIO Grant Aid, TRIO Student Ambassadors, and TRIO Study Abroad. Coordination may include development of program component materials, coordination with campus partners, and budget oversight for assigned program components.
  • Collaborate in planning, implementing, and evaluating academic, financial and cultural enrichment workshops and activities designed to maximize student learning and enhance student success of program participants.
Other Duties as Assigned – 5%
  • Complete other related and appropriate program tasks as assigned by the Director/Associate Director
  • Manage social media platforms and coordinate social media strategy.

Position Requirements

The current staffing model includes an alternating schedule of in-person and remote work. This may change in the future based on program needs and university requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree a minimum of two years of direct experience OR a master’s degree a minimum of one year of direct experience assessing individual academic and personal needs and developing success strategies for a similar student population.
  • Demonstrated experience serving students from diverse ethnic, racial, economic, cultural, and age backgrounds, as evidenced by application materials and interview.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication, as evidenced by application materials and interview.
  • Excellent organizational, record-keeping, multi-tasking skills as evidenced by past work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in social welfare, counseling, psychology, education, or other related field.
  • At least three years of past work experience in an educational setting as a full-time instructor, counselor, academic coach, or advisor.
  • Previous experience working with university-level programs offering financial aid, career, and/or academic advising services.
  • Experience providing presentations related to academic skill development, career interests, and/or financial literacy.
  • Experience working with TRIO, GEAR UP or similar programs.
  • Experience overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population.
  • Familiarity with University of Kansas policies, procedures, and student information systems (e.g., Jayhawk GPS, Enroll and Pay)
