Summary:

Functional summary: This position oversees the day-to-day operations of the Therkildsen Field Station at Emiquion (TFSE). Due to the distance from campus, this position will often work independently and be required to fulfill a range of tasks related to the successful operation of the Field Station property. The primary responsibilities are: -Maintain and coordinate use of the facilities. These activities should be done in consultation with the Director. -Coordinate and expand STEM outreach activities with k-12 schools and the general public. -Coordinate lab use and assist with logistics related to research. Due to the nature of the facility having overnight users and users outside of traditional hours, this position will occasionally need to be available on weekends and evenings.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for building functions, operating correctly inside and out, along setting and interpreting policy and procedures. These may include but are not limited to: fire alarms; lighting; plumbing; gutters; internet; lab equipment; phone service; heating and cooling; as well as boats, vehicles, and field equipment. Coordinate necessary repairs and replacement. This will be done in conjunction with UIS and approved contractors. Oversee administrative, clerical and custodial duties (bathrooms; hallways; kitchen areas; seasonally outdoor spaces)
  • Responsible for scheduling and administration of field trips and other k-12 outreach efforts, as well as continuing education groups (Master Naturalist for example). Maintain records of visitors, including any releases, permission slips, and required waivers. When necessary, coordinate these efforts with TNC (The Nature Conservancy) and the Emiquon Partnership
  • Administration of hands-on lessons/programs during field trips and outreach activities. Assist with the development of new activities in coordination with the Director
  • Point of contact with UIS Safety Officer. Performs safety checks and maintain records, along with compliance with safety requirements
  • Responsible for the scheduling of visiting groups, especially overnight and long-term stays; be available for check-in and check-out of users. Responsible for lab and classroom set up. Oversee the generating of invoices and making deposits; responsible for basic recordkeeping and organization of files and documents related to facility users.
  • Assist with seeking grant and/or external funding opportunities to support Emiqoun activities
  • Provide field assistance to visiting researchers and projects, that have been approved by the Director
  • Responsible for the management of inventory of UIS-TFSE equipment and maintaining lab supplies
  • Ensure that researchers have appropriate permits for carrying out their research and in consultation with the Director that this research falls in the scope of the TFSE
  • Ensuring that research equipment is operational

Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Any one or combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the categories below: A. college course work in facility management, operations management, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent: -60 semester hours or an Associate’s Degree equals one (1) year (12 months) B. training from a vocational, technical, or an armed forces program which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience. C. work experience which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance and work orders, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience.
3. One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory or administrative experience which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance and work orders, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts
Experience in the Environmental or Biology Field
Experience at a field station or research facility, supervision, First Aid, EMT, CPR, or other medical and / or emergency training / certification would be beneficial, but not required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
valid driver license
Complete the biannual First Aid, CPR, AED training course
Complete boater safety training course
Required to travel to and work on University of Illinois at Springfield campus also to include the Lake Springfield field station

Travel Requirements:
