Summary:
The director of media strategy is responsible for strategically leading the university's approach to leveraging both new and traditional media to meet university objectives, including advancing and protecting the university's reputation and enhancing its visibility. The director also acts as the official university spokesperson, serves as the UIS FOIA officer and is responsible for supervising a small staff.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Media Relations Strategy
  • Coordinate media interviews and appearances for UIS faculty, staff and students to help advance the UIS message. Proactively position UIS in securing earned media opportunities with relevant media outlets.
  • Write news releases and media advisories.
  • Serve as primary spokesperson for the university.
  • Maintain database of UIS faculty and staff to serve as thought-leaders for media relations activities.
  • Provide media training to UIS faculty and staff prior to media engagements, when warranted._
  • Create media strategies to support and align with marketing and web initiatives._
  • Maintain relevant areas of UIS website, including UIS News page
  • Maintain UIS Stylebook.
Social Media Strategy
  • Oversee the messaging strategy for the official UIS social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and TikTok) to effectively reach and engage internal and external audiences. Develop and executive social media campaigns to support university objectives.
  • Stay informed of current social media trends and channels for reaching key audiences.
  • Provide information on best practices to other campus communicators with administrative responsibility over UIS-sanctioned social media sites._
  • Support UIS Chancellor’s social media presence.
  • Oversee production of video and photography to support social-media objectives.
Leadership
  • Supervise, train, evaluate and mentor assistant director of media strategy
  • Share responsibility for training and supervising of office graduate assistant and student intern._
  • Provide leadership through facilitating meetings and other touchpoints among university communicators.
  • Provide overall direction to the unit to support individual and collective success.
Campus Communication
  • Coordinate emergency communication with UIS Police for the campus.
  • Coordinate and disseminate messaging from University Administration (President and BOT campus-wide emails and other communications).
  • Coordinate high-profile university communications (annual holiday video, commencement coverage, etc.)
FOIA
  • Serve as Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) officer for UIS, working closely with the Office of Legal Counsel and UA office to gather required information to comply with FOIA requests.
  • Maintain FOIA files for the campus.
Administrative
  • Provide communications counsel to the Chancellor and other senior leaders to develop, plan and amplify the UIS message.
  • Work with the fiscal officer for the Chancellor’s Division to develop and oversee the budget and accounts for the office.
  • Serve on the UI System’s Strategic Communications and Marketing Council for UIS.
  • Serve on university and system committees upon request.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communication or related field
  • At least five years of work experience in related field, including experience working with media (print, radio, TV, digital), serving as spokesperson and executing social media strategies.
  • At least three years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience advising senior executives on media strategy.
  • Experience with the FOIA process, including familiarity with institutional obligations for complying with requests.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in related field preferred.
Experience supporting institutional marketing objectives through media strategy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Strong writing skills with working knowledge of AP Style guidelines.
Ability to supervise or perform basic video and photo editing.
