Position Summary:
Working in a team environment and under the general direction of the RSSW Foreperson, the Lead for the Recycling, Surplus, and Solid Waste Technician is responsible for UI surplus operations and assisting with recycling and solid waste operations. Primary functions are overseeing financial transactions, handling, receiving, packaging, sales, shipping, and inventory of surplus items, following UI, state, and federal policies and regulations. This position will assist the RSSW Foreperson in tracking solid waste, and recycling volumes, organizing the RSSW warehouses, coordinating disposal of hazardous waste, establishing recycling and solid waste collection routes, serving as a backup for solid waste and recycling collection, training new staff, and overseeing a surplus technician, and assisting the RSSW Foreperson with supervising a crew of 5; and researching problems related to recycling's and solid waste as needed to provide answers/solutions.
This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or University closure.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One year providing financial or business process support within established policies and procedures.
  • Using computer software and applications for word processing, email, internet searches, and data organization
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Good knowledge, experience, and certification/training concerning hazardous materials receiving, packaging, storing, inventory; and shipping.
  • One (1) year of leadership experience and a good knowledge of current leadership practices and procedures.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Bend, stoop, crawl, twist, lift, shovel, and lift, carry and/or otherwise move items weighing up to approximately 50 lbs in a routine basis throughout the workday.
  • Stand and walk continuously throughout the shift. Some positions may require climbing and working from ladders.
  • Work routinely on uneven and slick surfaces.
  • Must have dependable means of communication and transportation for event, on-call or emergency work.
  • Ability to push/pull loaded wheeled carts, containers or tow units by hand over hard surfaces in inclement weather, some of which can weigh up to 1000 pounds.
  • Ability to work non-standard work hours.
