Other Conditions: Kamakakuokalani seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service oriented librarian to join the Center for Hawaiian Studies. Under the general direction of the Director of Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies the Librarian II will:
Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Lead in the continued development, implementation, and maintenance of special resource collection materials in the Hawaiian Studies Resource Center.
  2. Continue to develop, implement and revise the collection procedures and policies for the materials held in the Hawaiian Studies Resource Center.
  3. Oversee and maintain resource preparation, scanning, conversion, metadata, copyright and fair use data entry for the Center's online Hawaiian Studies and Pacific Islands digital collections.
  4. Develop and maintain relevant materials (e.g. bibliographic, instructional materials, videos, etc.) using both print and online formats and provide classroom instruction sessions and public awareness programs related to library resources as requested.
  5. Facilitate access to Hawai'i and Pacific materials and other library resources by creating online research guides, tutorials, and other informational and instructional materials.
  6. Develop curriculum and provide instructional services and research consultation on Hawaiian Studies Information Resources and Hawaiian Archival Research materials in person and online to faculty/staff and students as appropriate.
  7. Work collegially with other Hawaiian, Pacific & Oceanic librarians at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, and throughout the region and keep abreast of recent developments in information technology and information literary.
  8. Continually develop competence and knowledge concerning digitization and its application, and maintenance in an academic special resource library.
  9. Generate resources through grant writing and / or fundraising activities for the operation and maintenance of the Hawaiian Studies Resource Center.
  10. Conduct research related to the field of Library Sciences.
  11. Supervise students and volunteers working in the KCHS Library.
  12. Participate in Departmental and Center initiatives, meetings, and committee work.
  13. Engage in other duties and assigned by the director.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  1. At the time of hire must have a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution, or equivalent.
  2. One year work experience in an academic library with a preference for Hawaiian materials.
  3. Proficiency in 'Olelo Hawai'i and Familiarity with Hawaiian language and Hawaiian resources.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Competency with computer word processing, spreadsheet, database, and citation software as well as library management systems (e.g., ALMA, LibGuides).
  6. Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects and ability to work independently and follow through on work assignments.
  7. Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement innovative approaches and solutions to improve library services continuously.
  8. Record of active membership in professional associations, service and scholarship.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated experience in collection development in a research/academic library and basic knowledge or archival processing and best practices.
  2. Extensive knowledge providing electronic information resources including online catalogs and services, locally mounted systems, and internet-based information resources related to Hawai'i.
  3. Experience with database programs for general use and archives/manuscripts processing, bibliographic citation software.
  4. Ability to work in a collegial and collaborative environment and to work effectively with a diverse user population.
  5. Ability to network and support partnerships with University of Hawaii departments and Hawaiian organizations.
  6. Fluency in Hawaiian Language.
  7. A record of undergraduate or graduate coursework related to Hawaiian Studies, Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands or working knowledge of Hawaiian history and standard reference sources for Hawai'i.
  8. Experience in curriculum development, teaching and/or conducting training workshops.
  9. Experience with online (digital) collection management systems (e.g. ALMA, ContentDM), instructional design, distance education, and web-based tools - especially content management systems like Laulima.
  10. Successful grant writing and implementation experience.
  11. Ability to work comfortably with ambiguity, to progress multiple priorities/projects simultaneously and flexibility to accommodate shifting priorities.
  12. Knowledge of national standards and current trends, issues, workflows, and best practices in library services and emerging technologies.
  13. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous scholarship and Indigenous librarianship.
