Introduction
This position serves as a key member of the Dean’s leadership team. The Director of the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) provides academic and administrative leadership for PACE, serves as an active supporter and proponent of the missions and goals of the College and Center, and represents the University of Hawai‘i, the College and Center in entrepreneurship education locally, nationally and internationally. This role advances the mission of the College and Center to educate students from all colleges and schools at UH M?noa, and across the university system for the 21st century workforce utilizing innovation and entrepreneurship; analyzes, reviews, and coordinates the development, modification and refinement of academic programs and curricular offerings related to innovation and entrepreneurship; fosters innovation and entrepreneurship among students, faculty and staff; develops workforce and venture development pathways and programs; and builds relationships both internally and outside of UH to explore innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities and partnerships.
 
Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Promotes, builds capacity in and access to entrepreneurship education, including the entrepreneurial mindset, at the College, Center, and across the UH Manoa campus.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with faculty, staff and students, and facilitates collaboration between colleges and schools, such as Business, Engineering, Law, Natural Sciences, and Health/Medicine.
  • Develops relationships with industry, entrepreneurs, investors, business, government and community leaders. Supports the establishment of collaborative projects and partnerships consistent with the mission and priorities of the College, Center and UH.
  • Coordinates development of and participation in innovation and entrepreneurship programs within UH, with the private sector and government entities that align with the mission and priorities of the College, Center and UH.
  • Pursues funding opportunities to support and advance innovation and entrepreneurship education and venture development.
  • Plans, coordinates, and develops policies and programs, and is responsible for the overall administration of the Center, including implementation of policies and programs, overseeing personnel, budgeting, reporting and other administrative matters.
  • Develops and updates the Center’s strategic plan.
  • Evaluates performance of the Center’s programs.
  • Manages and supervises the productivity and performance of direct reports within the Center.
  • Develops undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship curriculum, including those with an Asia Pacific theme, in collaboration and/or alignment with faculty and academic units.
  • Assembles and manages an advisory board of entrepreneurs, investors, and leaders in business and the community.
  • Maintains contact with current, potential and past supporters and alumni of programs. Answers questions and provides information on programs to encourage use of programs.
  • Executes an agenda of community outreach and engages corporate partners and individuals who advocate entrepreneurship education.
  • Promotes the College and Center at national and international venues to grow the Center’s reputation as a leading center for entrepreneurship.
  • Supervises preparation of financial statements and projections related to the Center for the Dean's office as required.
  • Manages the Center’s budget and develops fundraising strategy in coordination with the Dean’s office and the College’s development staff.
  • Supervises logistics support staff to ensure that administrative and fiscal matters are carried out in an efficient and effective manner. Reviews budgets and reports prepared by staff and supervises fiscal and administrative processes for programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work is performed with wide latitude for exercising independent judgment and initiative, under the general supervision and guidance from the Dean.

Direction and Review of Work Received
Work is reviewed by the Dean for results achieved.
 
Contacts and Relationships
Work involves considerable contact with diverse constituents and other stakeholders, both internal and external to the University, including senior executives, administrators, faculty, staff, students and community members.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Law or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in a senior/managerial position in a large, complex public institution or private sector company dealing with idea development and protection, commercialization, administering and developing collaborative projects, or starting a new business and holding an executive position.
  • Demonstrated ability to form alliances in support of an interdisciplinary mission; ability to bring groups together and establish effective and meaningful partnerships.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in managing entrepreneurship-related activities.
  • Ability to recognize advances in technology and integrate them into programs and curriculum.
  • Knowledge of federal and state grant programs and funding sources for entrepreneurial endeavors, including angel investors, venture capital and philanthropy.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and higher education institutional rules and policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a team and to work well with faculty, administrative leadership, staff and students. Ability to handle sensitive situations and to manage conflict effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster relationships with external parties, including a range of government, business and community organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and present ideas, both in writing and orally, in an understandable and concise manner, with internal and external constituencies. Ability to articulate a vision for the Center’s role in innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Well-developed conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify a problem, develop a solution, and execute corrective action, either in cooperation with others or independently.
  • Strong understanding of the learning methodologies and needs of students in higher education with an interest in innovation and entrepreneurship. Demonstrated ability to design and implement programs tailored to student needs and interests.
 
Desirable Qualifications
  • Doctorate (e.g., Ph.D.) in areas of business or related disciplines.
  • Experience as a leader/manager at a major university.
  • Established reputation and relationships in the Hawai‘i innovation and entrepreneurship community.
  • Understanding of business and government practices in Hawai‘i, nationally, and in the international arena.
  • Demonstrated fundraising ability and experience.
  • Ability to work effectively in an administrative organization built around a consensus-building, team approach to management.
  • Familiarity with UH and its innovation and entrepreneurship programs across the university system.
  • Hands-on experience in the areas of grant-writing, public relations, and media relations in Hawai‘i.
