Assistant Engineer positions available aboard R/V Kilo Moana (KM), a 186′ SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) vessel conducting oceanographic research operations for the University of Hawaii.

Under supervision, as delegated from the Chief Engineer, serves as an assistant in assigned matters pertaining to engineering and administration of the Engineering Department. Serves as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW), supervising the daily work of junior Engineering Department personnel sharing the same watch schedule. Under direction from the First Assistant Engineer, manages routine operations for loading and shifting fuel and ballast in the ship’s tanks in accordance with requirements for plant operation and vessel stability within prescribed limits, and is responsible for all maintenance/repair tasks on these systems. Performs all other duties as directed by the Chief Engineer or First Assistant Engineer. Employee will work on a rotational schedule based on operational needs.

Requirements

Unlimited Assistant Engineer Motor Propelled Vessels License, USCG STCW Medical Certificate. Current MMC and required STCW documentation of training and validity for licenses. Valid TWIC and US Passport required. Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test or hold current drug testing verification letter. Must be a US citizen.

RCUH / University of Hawai’i (UH) Marine Operations are coordinated by the UH School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology’s (SOEST), an operator institution in the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) and subscribes to the UNOLS Research Vessel Safety Standards.

The UH Marine Center is located at Pier 35 in Honolulu Harbor and is responsible for coordinating operations on and maintaining the R/V Kilo Moana (KM), a 186ft SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) vessel. The vessel was built in 2001 and commissioned in 2002. SOEST also owns and operates a 6000-m capable Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Lu'ukai, which is usually deployed from the KM.

Services provided by the Marine Center include: ship scheduling; provision of shipboard crew and technicians; engineering support; coordination of shared equipment such as underwater vehicles, and small boats; and vessel chartering.
