At UConn Health, this class is accountable for supervising a large crew (6 or more) of highly skilled trades workers and lower-level employees in the carpentry trade.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises a large crew of highly skilled workers and lower level employees.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIESSchedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; 

Provides staff training and assistance; 

Conducts performance evaluations; 

Determines priorities and plans crew work; 

Establishes and maintains crew procedures; 

Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; 

Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 

Prepares reports and correspondence; 

Performs some of the more skilled duties involved; 

May make plans and cost estimates of work to be done; 

Performs related duties as required. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITYConsiderable knowledge of relevant state and national codes and regulations; modern methods and equipment involved in the carpentry trade; 

Considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; 

Skill in performing technical duties of carpentry; 

Considerable ability to read and interpret specifications, blueprints, and sketches; 

Ability to utilize computer software; 

Supervisory ability. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

 Six (6) years of experience in the carpentry trade.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of the General Experience must have included performing highly skilled duties in carpentry.

 

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Qualified Craft Worker.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSIncumbents in this class may be required to travel.

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

Considerable knowledge of flat roof construction , repair, and inspectionKnowledge of welding , machining, and metal fabrication.  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSIncumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.

A physical examination may be required. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONSIncumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.

The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.

 SCHEDULE: This is a full time position, 40 hours per week, primarily Monday – Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, holidays are required as scheduled, may be required to work other shifts including weekends to accommodate departmental or project needs, 30 minute unpaid meal break.
