Position overview Position title: Structural Biology IT Specialist (Associate Specialist - Specialist ranks)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. A reasonable estimate for this position is $70,500 - $86, 900.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

Professor Seth Rubin in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Structural Biology IT Specialist. The specialist will contribute to structural biology research projects in collaboration with researchers in the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences and manage data processing and storage in the electron microscopy facility.

Primary responsibilities will include overseeing and maintaining computational resources for electron microscopy and structural biology research. The successful candidate will also participate in collaborative research towards macromolecular structure determination and modelling with faculty research groups and train students and postdoctoral fellows in structural biology computational methods. The incumbent's role will be primarily on the end of data processing and structure solving using available electron microscopy and deep learning software packages, and they will train others to perform these tasks.

Applicants with experience in the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Knowledge of processing data from electron diffraction and eletron tomography experiments.
  • Knowledge of implementing deep learning tools for structural modeling such as AlphaFold and Multimers.

The successful candidate may be eligible for remote or hybrid work arrangements.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Master's degree or higher (or an equivalent foreign degree) in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, physics, computer science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of macromolecular structure determination by single particle analysis of cryo-electron microscopy data.
  • Experience in management of large data sets.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with troubleshooting software used for structural biology research, including experimental and deep learning approaches.
  • Demonstrated record of working with and training a diverse group of students, postdoctoral fellows, and scientists.
