DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Risk Services department serves as the campus resource on risk management issues and acts as the channel for implementation of UC system-wide risk management programs. The department is organized into two broad areas: the Workers' Compensation Program and the Property & Casualty Program.

JOB SUMMARY
Develops, implements and coordinates activities and programs that support loss control and loss prevention for property and casualty exposures. Serves as the primary campus contact in support of a variety of systemwide resources related to property and casualty exposures. Interprets, applies and advises campus about select UC policies as relates to risk and loss control. Specific activities include, but are not limited to, serving as the primary contact for travel insurance by coordinating with campus partners and UC OPRS in support of travelers; interpreting and applying UC policy regarding vehicle safety by working with campus partners on vehicle safety initiatives and training; coordinating resources for the protection of minors by facilitating communication between consultants and campus partners and development of loss prevention systems. Supports the property and casualty risk management group with insurance underwriting activities, claim activities, data gathering and evaluation, special projects as developed and assigned.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $61,800 - $73,850/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
50% - Risk control
Develops, implements and administers risk control programs and strategies to prevent losses and reduce insurance premiums.
Activities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Serves as primary contact for travel insurance program, coordinating with contacts throughout the university and UC OPRS.
  • Provides support to travelers prior to and during travel, with focus on international travel.
  • Develops and supports vehicle safety initiatives.
  • Coordinates protection of minors program, using third-party vendor and University resources.
30% - Risk analysis
Analyzes complex loss areas, with initial focus on travel and auto insurance programs. Gathers, evaluates, prepares, and summarizes areas of potential loss; recommends appropriate type and level of loss protection to be implemented.
10% - Risk control monitoring
Monitors control strategies and programs involving claim payments and property and casualty exposures.
10% - Training and outreach
Designs, develops and presents training presentations to clients.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Familiarity with risk management concepts, including loss prevention and loss control strategies.
  • Familiarity with insurance concepts and ability to interpret and explain insurance details to a diverse audience.
  • Thorough written communication skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Thorough verbal and interpersonal communication skills, and active listening skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Proven customer service orientation and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to use critical thinking and analytical skills to solve problems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Thorough knowledge in the following areas: risk management; insurance; forecasting and analysis; accounting; knowledge of common computer application programs; ability to interpret, understand and apply general organizational processes, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Proven ability to concisely present complex risk findings and make recommendations verbally and in writing.
  • Strong skills required to develop course materials and deliver content effectively to diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of UCSC processes and procedures; understanding of UCSC rules and regulations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to conduct outdoor site visits, including use of required personal protective equipment, as required to conduct investigations, inspections, or view work in place.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
