DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Scout is a division of the UC Santa Cruz Extension. While UC Scout's home campus is located at 3175 Bowers Avenue in Santa Clara, the UC Scout team is a fully remote team, with individuals making occasional visits to the campus as needed. UC Scout serves high school students, providing online high school courses for students and curricula for educators.

UC Scout's growing team comprises six departments: instructional design, media, academics, support, outreach, and business intelligence. The team consists of approximately 50 full-time staff and 70 part-time employees. UC Scout works closely with UCSC Extension support staff, including IT, finance, and the office of the Dean to support UC Scout's goals.

The Academic department is one of several that comprise UC Scout: Academic, Instructional Design, Media Production, Business Intelligence, Outreach, and Support. Together, the team provides high-quality A-G and AP curricula and courses for students in need, with an emphasis on advancing the academic success of California's educationally underserved students.

JOB SUMMARY

The Course Developer and Facilitator works full-time on a team of subject-credentialed professionals who report to a Teacher Lead and ultimately the Academic Director.

As a Curriculum Developer, the incumbent collaborates with the Production and Instructional Design teams, serves as a core member of course development and improvement projects, and makes ongoing improvements and corrections to the courses within their subject oversight portfolio. UC Scout holds high-quality standards and is continuously adding to and improving course content and technologies.

As an Online Course Facilitator, the incumbent leads high school students through UC Scout courses across three terms (fall, spring, and summer) each year via a Learning Management System (LMS). This entails virtual live interactions with students over Zoom, grading and leaving feedback on assignments, maintaining student records, and communicating regularly with your students and their family, guardians, or other supporting adults.

UC Scout Course Developer and Facilitator positions also support and guide external teachers who work for UC Scout on a part-time basis and are facilitating courses within the same subject portfolio.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $74,300 - $94,300/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

65% - Develop & Facilitate Online Courses

Facilitate Online Learning

As the Course Facilitator for live sections of courses each term, delivers an exceptional learning experience to students.

  • Prepare online classrooms each term.
  • Communicate with students and guardians consistently.
  • Grade submissions in a timely manner.
  • Provide high-quality feedback on student assignments.
  • Lead live Zoom discussions or sessions with students.
  • Record student activity and progress, identifying students in need of extra support to succeed.
  • Apply student accommodations to the online classroom environment.
  • Review academic integrity reports provided by the exam proctoring provider and escalate incidents as needed.

Curriculum and Course Development

As the resident Subject Matter Expert (SME), develops lesson content, course outlines, standards alignment maps, assignments and assessments, and video lecture scripts for online high school courses.

  • Align curriculum to applicable content standards and frameworks in collaboration with other departments.
  • Develop and refine lesson video scripts.
  • Collaborate with other departments to create lesson visuals and resources, improve or update course content, and incorporate new educational tools and technologies into Canvas LMS.
  • Create brand new course content or improve/replace content in existing courses, depending on the type of project.

15% - Mentor Colleagues

  • Provide mentorship and support to part-time course facilitators each term.
  • Assist with preparing course sections that will be taught by part-time facilitators each term.
  • Monitor part-time facilitator performance and escalate concerns when appropriate.

15% - Quality Assurance

  • Review course materials and instructional videos to ensure quality and compliance with standards (internal and external).
  • Consistently enhance courses based on student and teacher feedback.
  • Participate in the course approval process and documentation preparation for accreditation review.
  • Make recommendations for the improvement of the program and courses within the relevant subject portfolio.

5% - Special Projects

  • Collaborate with UC Scout colleagues via phone, email, video conferencing, and occasional travel.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in ongoing professional development.
  • Assist in occasional special projects and internal task forces as needed, including but not limited to accreditation reports and informational webinars for an external audience.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid California Single Subject Professional Clear Teaching Credential in Physics.
  • Bachelor's degree in related areas.
  • Strong ability to provide effective learning experiences for students from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and with varying mental, social and emotional maturity.
  • Experience teaching and editing a course in a Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Experience in online teaching at the high school level.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize, develop, and improve online course curricula and materials, teaching resources, and related assets.
  • Track record of continuously acquiring new skills and gaining knowledge to stay current with the teaching and educational technology fields.
  • Capable of working collaboratively on cross-functional teams and managing interpersonal conflicts appropriately.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid California Single Subject Teaching Credential in second subject.
  • Current Clear cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) certification via California Teacher of English Learners (CTEL) or equivalent Certification.
  • Experience in training, mentoring, or otherwise assisting teaching or curriculum development peers.
  • Extensive knowledge of online teaching and learning strategies, pedagogy, and best practices.
  • Experience teaching and/or developing AP Physics courses.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • This is a fully remote position, and the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
