DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology (MCD) is comprised of thirty-two faculty members and four lecturers, whose work focuses on questions of how information in DNA is packaged, read, and interpreted in living cells, how those cells are built and regenerated, and how cells work together to comprise a whole organism.

JOB SUMMARY
The Graduate Student Advisor manages the MCD graduate program for students pursuing M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and is responsible for coordination of all programmatic activities and support services; has administrative oversight for the Interdisciplinary Program in Biomedical Science and Engineering (PBSE) for students entering graduate programs in MCD Biology, Chemistry, Biomolecular Engineering and Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology); is responsible for the recruitment, appointment, reappointment, merit and promotions for non-ladder academic employees, and provides general administrative support to the department, and leadership in the manager's absence.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $73,850 - $85,900/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation rate for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted rate. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES
35% - Student Advising
  • Independently advises students and resolves full range of academic issues and other matters. Assesses student needs, goals, problems, and personal adjustments relating to their academic performance, including sensitive and confidential student welfare issues resolution.
  • Applying advanced student services concepts, provides the most complex student services to the organization's management, faculty and students.
  • Recommends resolution of extremely sensitive, specialist, and/or complex financial aid issues and/or administers department block grants and restricted funds.
20% - Planning and Administration
  • Manages all activities and develop/implement procedures to facilitate the day-to-day operation of the graduate program to ensure fulfillment of requirements and long-range plans established by the Graduate Division, Graduate Council, Department Chairs, and Graduate Directors.
  • Tracks and reports graduate program accountability measures. Provides data and analysis for annual departmental and divisional academic program planning processes.
  • Advises organization's management on available funds for entering students based upon special funding from all sources.
20% - Admissions
  • Consults with faculty and department manager to establish goals for program growth and annual target for admitting new students.
  • Serves as liaison between the Graduate Division, dean's office, and department faculty and staff regarding admissions and student support.
  • Manages student support allocation(s) from internal and external sources.
  • Advises department / school / college on outreach strategies, and helps identify targeted institutions to meet organization's goals; coordinates, reviews and advises dean and faculty on transferability and applicability of non-UC courses.
20% - Academic Human Resources
  • Responsible for recruitment, appointment, reappointment, merits and promotion for non-ladder academic employees including Teaching Assistant appointments Unit 18 lecturers. Analyzes options and advises faculty regarding academic research appointments.
  • Prepares job descriptions, places advertisements, and coordinates searches.
5% - Misc
  • Coordinates space and equipment needs for faculty and graduate students.
  • Provides advice on alternatives to meet needs, identifies campus resources, facilitates communication among departmental personnel, divisional facilities staff, and campus units.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning.
  • Ability to identify measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Advanced written communication skills.
  • Advanced oral communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to perform the functions of the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs.
  • Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Technical and conceptual knowledge of Academic Information System (AIS).
  • Ability to work with academic departments and graduate students to support student diversity in the department.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
