Position overview
Position title: Kapuscinski-Sarker Lab Junior Specialist
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Percent time: Full-time (100%).
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description
The Environmental Studies Department( https://envs.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a junior specialist. Under the direction of Dr. Pallab Sarker, the junior specialist will be responsible for the following duties with the Kapuscinski-Sarker Lab Group:
  • Daily management of the laboratory to ensure proper use, maintenance, and availability of equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare samples and inorganic chemical analysis of samples via lab methods/protocols for experimental diets, ingredients, soil and biological samples (fish and plants).
  • Develop and implement new or improved analytical methods, procedures, and techniques to meet research requirements.
  • Train and closely work with students and other assistants.
  • Organize, prepare data visualizations, and interpret the data resulting from experimentation to present findings with conclusions to principal investigators.
  • Organize team meetings, experimental planning, schedules, and timeline settings
  • Assist with regular recirculating aquaculture system maintenance at the ecological aquaculture greenhouse.
  • Assist in conducting experiments, including using a range of aquaculture and agro-ecological lab and field equipment, feeding fish, measuring water chemistry, data collection and experimental maintenance.
Applicants with expertise in the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience with inorganic chemistry methods to readily learn and conduct chemical analyses, prepare samples for complex nutrient/ anti-nutrient analyses.
  • Conducting safe and orderly management of lab bench research; ordering and maintaining inventories of research equipment, chemicals, feed ingredients, preparing feed, solutions and reagents, and other supplies.
  • Developing and conducting standard operating procedures for maintenance of and experiments in the bench lab.
  • Collecting data, organizing data and basic statistical analyses; training and coordination of students and research assistants.
  • Coordinating research team work-flow such as team meetings (including individual meeting with faculty, students, staff), experimental planning, schedules, and timeline settings.
  • Maintaining live fish, and recirculating aquaculture systems, especially biofilters, to provide optimal conditions for research animals. Experience maintaining website and using social media for remote-only scientific communications.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelors degree (or an equivalent foreign degree) in chemistry, biology, environmental science, fisheries and wildlife, aquaculture, agriculture, animal nutrition field, or a field relevant to the advertised position.
