DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) supports the University's mission by providing access to UC Santa Cruz, acting as fiscal stewards, and managing the sustainable planning, design, and operation of safe and equitable bicycle/pedestrian programs, transit services, parking, and other transportation-related needs. TAPS is dedicated to being innovative, sustainable, and customer-focused providers of access to UC Santa Cruz.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the TAPS Operations Manager, the incumbent provides administrative and staffing support for the daily field operation of TAPS Event Parking. Major duties include the hiring and training of 30-50 student employees annually, coordination of the traffic-control program, and coordination of student Event Staff for delivering a broad range of parking-related services for regular and special events on campus. Training of students includes an emphasis on following university cash handling procedures during permit sales and post-event reconciliation.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Salary Information: Salary Range: $26.12 - 26.69 / hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
40% - Event Operations
  • Check FileMaker Pro database regularly to track upcoming events
  • Review event details and determine if additional staffing or equipment is necessary.
  • Create and maintain staffing schedule from a pool of student employees.
  • Maintain field equipment at all storage locations (e.g. barricades, delineators, radios, cones, whistles, vests, signage, etc.) and provide recommendations to the TAPS Operations Manager on the purchase of new equipment as needed.
  • Create, post, monitor, and remove event signage.
  • Take inventory of equipment and permits on a quarterly basis.
  • Work with the TAPS Field Operations Manager and Event Field Operations Lead to oversee large event parking operations.
  • Work with the UC Police Department to oversee traffic-control for high-volume events.
  • Communicate with customers in the field to solicit additional information or respond to complaints.
30% - Traffic Control Operations
  • Coordinate traffic control operations to support busy intersections during peak hours and move traffic seamlessly through the campus.
  • Train new students regarding safety, responsibility, and the logistics of each intersection and observe students in the field until they are ready to work unsupervised.
  • Recommend potential new locations and work with the TAPS Field Operations Manager to determine safe staffing levels and procedures.
25% - Administrative
  • Hire and train between 30-50 student employees. Training includes intersection-specific logistics for the traffic-control program as well as permit and cash handling procedures for both on-site permit sales and the post-event reconciliation processes for event parking.
  • Identify and provide additional training to 4-6 student Leads, who have a deeper understanding of the operation, additional authority, and more responsibilities.
  • Report work place incidents to TAPS Field Operations Manager for potential disciplinary action.
  • Review the scheduling program and compare it to student timesheets to identify potential time reporting errors.
  • Approve student timesheets on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Monitor the issuing and return of all equipment (e.g., vests, gloves, whistles, lanyards) checked out to student employees. Work with the TAPS Business Office to recover the cost of missing equipment.
  • Coordinate daily parking lot surveys and track the data that is received.
  • Schedule TAPS Events and Maintenance vehicles for routine and supplemental maintenance and maintain monthly mileage logs.
5% - Additional Duties
  • Provide feedback regarding short and long-term program improvements to TAPS Field Operations Manager.
  • Work field shifts as needed.
  • Participate in various campus event planning meetings.
  • Attend required trainings both on and off campus.
  • Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Required Leadership and interpersonal skills sufficient to motivate staff, delegate, assign, and monitor workload, for a large student-based operation.
  • Experience in cash handling and record keeping skills and the ability to perform with a high degree of accuracy, in compliance with all PCI standards, campus policies, and procedures.
  • Organizational and time management skills sufficient to prioritize competing job responsibilities and function under the pressure of meeting deadlines with frequent interruptions and with strict attention to detail.
  • Ability to adhere to time and attendance requirements and punctuality standards, and exercise good judgment and discretion in handling confidential situations or materials.
  • Skill and experience to present a positive, customer service-oriented public image, maintain a courteous and harmonious working relationship with the campus community and members of the public, and train student workers to do the same.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with students, faculty, staff, and co-workers of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience and knowledge of safety issues as they pertain to services provided in roadways (e.g., selling permits, traffic-control) and the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and legally.
  • Ability to use a computer and computer programs (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, database, scheduling software), as well as a variety of office machines.
  • Preferred Experience with safely directing traffic and providing information/directions to visitors.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with UCSC campus roads and parking spaces.
  • Experience planning and coordinating multiple large events simultaneously.
  • Experience coordinating large numbers of student employees
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Clery Act : This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA); required to report crimes, incidents, and disciplinary referral statistics as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 USC 1092(f)).
