DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWThe UCSC Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (DDCSP) aims to grow diverse leadership to strengthen conservation through a highly selective two-year undergraduate fellowship and lifelong alumni network. Each year forty students from across the United States participate in immersive, experiential learning opportunities, unique research, internship experiences, and professional development.

JOB SUMMARYThis position will support UCSC's Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (DDCSP), a two-year program of conservation science and leadership support aimed at diversifying conservation leadership. Under the general supervision of the Program Director, the incumbent will manage program finances, organize multi-day events, coordinate travel and payments, and support student needs during internships. This position can be remote, hybrid, or in-person. Three to four-day trips (4-5 days each) to Central California (expenses covered) will be essential.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATIONSalary Information: $24.64/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES35% - Administrative Coordination
- Administers operational programs or activities defined by the programs' faculty and staff Directors, including the following functions: communications (email, social media, and print), managing recruitment databases, payroll, student services and mentoring, and program logistics.
35% - Coordinating Program Finances
- Gathers and analyzes financial and other resource data; prepares reports or analyses of operational activities, evaluates current and proposed services, etc. Functions as a resource on issues such as researching complex financial discrepancies, vendor concerns, or program logistics.
- Maintains budgets.
25% - Travel and Event Coordination
- Manages complex travel arrangements, accommodation, space planning for multi-day trips and events.
- Attends and coordinates 4-5 events per year with Scholars in and around Central California.
5% - Training and Support
- Coaches Scholars through challenges associated with summer internships and professional life.
- Trains other personnel and student assistants, and serves as a resource on administrative policies and procedures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or equivalent experience.
- Excellent communication skills: oral, written, and digital media. Ability to edit writing for concision, clarity, and coherence.
- Experience with budgeting, financial accounting, and payments such as ordering, payroll, or event planning.
- Experience with computerized office environment, including skills with word processing, databases, spreadsheets, PDFs, slide presentation software, webpage maintenance, and email. Ability to quickly master new software.
- Skills in critical thinking and flexible, adaptive, and wise judgment in decision-making and problem-solving.
- Well-organized and able to calmly juggle and achieve multiple responsibilities.
- Ability to identify problems and develop and implement effective solutions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including active listening.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations and support equity and inclusion.
- Ability to be patient and persistent in navigating different policies and procedures within UCSC and in interactions with many partner organizations, government regulations, faculty, and students.
- Political acumen to cooperate well with many parties within and beyond UCSC.
- Experience teaching, training, or planning development for others' professional skills such as mentoring, communications, applying for jobs and programs.
- Ability to discern sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in related area plus one years of relevant experience or equivalent training.
- Working knowledge of or experience working on research, teaching, or practice in ecology and/or conservation science.
- Experience in advising diverse students interested in ecology and conservation.
- Knowledge of University policies, rules, processes, and procedures relevant to key responsibilities of this position; or, similar experience from another large institutional setting.
- Ability to converse in English and Spanish.
- Experience with campus systems and forms such as CruzBuy, UC travel, etc.
- Experience organizing and implementing student, professional development, speaker, or related events.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
- Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Ability to work a variable schedule.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
- Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
- Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
