DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Division of Undergraduate Education (UE) is a complex organization comprised of the UE divisional offices (immediate office, Academic and Staff Human Resources, and Planning and Resource Management), Campus Advising Coordination, Summer Session, Office of the Registrar, Colleges Academic (Cowell, Stevenson, Crown, Merrill, Kresge, Oakes, Porter, College 9, John R. Lewis and Rachel Carson College), Enrollment Management (Undergraduate Admissions, Orientation Programs, and Financial Aid), and the Educational Partnership Center (EPC General, EAOP, K-12 Regional Alliances, Research & Evaluation, COSMOS, MESA, CAL-SOAP, CRLP, and GEAR-UP). The Division is responsible for over 300 staff and student FTE, and over 100 academic appointments, all helping students be successful.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Provost and Chief of Staff and working closely with the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education, the Director of Communications is charged with developing and implementing multi-channel communication plans to support and increase visibility to Undergraduate Education.
Aligning with campus priorities, the Director of Communications strengthens community and respect through effective and transparent communications that reflect and support the campus's commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The Director of Communications is responsible for planning, development, and implementation of marketing strategies and communications related to Undergraduate Education and its units and serves as project manager for communications/ marketing initiatives of the Division.
The Director of Communications reviews online presence and develops strategies to implement web communications and social media platforms for Undergraduate Education. The Director of Communications ensures that branding and messaging developed within the Division of Undergraduate Education and its units are supportive of campus messaging and branding and work closely with Undergraduate Education leadership and its units as well as with University Relations to ensure adherence to all University standards.
The Director of Communications collaborates closely with colleagues at all levels across the campus, including communication leaders in other divisions and communications and marketing staff within the Division of Undergraduate Education.
Balancing short-term communication needs with developing strategic communication plans to advance long-term strategic initiatives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment is critical to the success of the Undergraduate Education's communications efforts.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $102,500 - $125,000/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES
50% - Content Creation and Management
  • Manages complex comprehensive communications programs and projects, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications for the Division of Undergraduate Education, collaborating with University Relations, academic departments, and other campus stakeholders.
  • Works with Undergraduate Education faculty and staff leadership as well as UE unit-level communications and marketing staff to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans.
  • Provides advice and counsel to divisional leadership on all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, effective messaging, and problem resolution.
  • Produces a variety of communication pieces in a variety of venues including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications.
  • Ensures production of high-quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints.
20% - Website Design and Management
  • Designs and builds a variety of websites, including layout and information architecture.
  • Maintains and updates websites based on the needs of Undergraduate Education and our units.
  • Monitors performance of UE websites and makes changes to meet performance standards and goals such as load time, page file size, and search engine optimization.
20% - Stakeholder Relationships
  • Forges and maintains strong relationships with colleagues across UC Santa Cruz and engages with peers across UC.
  • Consults with campus colleagues for new topics and content based on trends within the University's competitive and cultural landscape.
  • Contributes to communications projects from conception through completion.
  • Works cross-functionally to support the rollout of communication campaigns/events across the university. Manages expectations to preserve stakeholder relationships and department reputation.
10% - Crisis Communications
  • Actively partners with colleagues in crisis communications planning and preparedness.
  • Under supervision, communicates with internal and external audiences during crises, assisting with internal reputational management before, during and after such crises.
  • Identifies reputational risks and gauges sentiment related to the university name and brand.
  • Participates in scheduled crisis training exercises.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, lively, engaging, and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences, while ensuring adherence to the campus's tone and style.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
  • Demonstrated fluency in the language, principles and practices that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong understanding of the internet and web-based technologies, including content management systems, image editing, social media, and more.
  • Demonstrated ability to frequently and effectively interact and collaborate with multiple stakeholders in order to develop communication plans and materials that help enhance awareness of programs, initiatives, and news.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic, long-term communication plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide advice and assistance to senior administrators regarding sensitive and/or controversial subjects.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across units and with diverse constituencies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Understanding of the research, teaching and public service conducted at a major research university.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must be able to work remotely from a home office and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
