Position overview Position title: Biomolecular Engineering Junior Specialist (Russell Lab)
Salary range: A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 - $54,600.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as June 14, 2024. Degree requirement must be completed by June 13, 2024, for employment effective June 14, 2024, and beyond.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The hiring unit, within the Biomolecular Engineering Department at UCSC focuses on research and education at the intersection of biology, computer science, and engineering, to drive advances in areas such as genomics, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, and biomolecular modeling.

Under the direction of Assistant Professor Russell, the research specialist will contribute towards genomic data production and analysis, Drosophila maintenance, and Wolbachia and Drosophila candidate gene testing through confocal imaging and cytological analysis.

An ideal candidate would have general knowledge in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, cell biology, developmental biology, and bioinformatics (e.g., bash, python, common bioinformatics software for short read alignment and analysis).

Special consideration will be given to candidates with any of the following areas of expertise:

  • Hands-on wet-lab expertise in plate-scale Illumina library preparation with Tn5 transposase, Drosophila genetic crosses, and Drosophila ovary dissection and preparation for confocal imaging.

  • Dry-lab expertise in short-read alignment and python pipeline use, as well as image analysis in ImageJ/FIJI.

The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Baccalaureate degree (or an equivalent foreign degree) in biology, chemistry, bio-engineering, biotechnology, or bioinformatics. It is anticipated that the degree will be completed by June 13 2024.
  • A minimum of one year's experience making plate-scale Illumina sequencing libraries from genomic DNA.
  • A minimum of one year's experience performing Drosophila genetic crosses and stock maintenance.
  • A minimum of one year's experience with biological sample preparation for confocal microscopy.
  • Coding experience (e.g., bash, python, C , R).
