Position description

Clinical Investigator starting approx. July 2023

UCSF Division of General Internal Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital
The Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is recruiting for a Clinical Investigator (MD/DO or PhD/DrPH/ScD trained) to join the faculty as an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (SFGH). We are seeking candidates with interest and expertise in conducting research on a range of issues, including primary care, health disparities, health policy, health communication, substance use disorders, chronic disease prevention and control, implementation science, and women's health. In collaboration with UCSF's Center for Vulnerable Populations, Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, and the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, DGIM faculty conduct rigorous research designed to provide the evidence needed to drive changes in patient care and health policy. We have a long track-record of success obtaining investigator-initiated research funding and career development awards for our junior faculty. Partnering with the community, we're tackling some of the most challenging problems facing society through discovery, innovation, policy, and advocacy.

Applicants are expected to have a well-developed vision for a career development award (i.e., NIH K23, K08, K99, etc) and to ultimately develop an independent research program. We require a commitment to providing high quality care to the urban underserved and a love for teaching. Experience working and doing research in a safety net setting, with vulnerable populations, with community organizations or related policy entities is strongly preferred.

* Non-physician researchers applying for this faculty position must have a doctoral degree (PhD or DrPH) with at least 3 years of post-doctoral research experience.
* Physician candidates applying for this faculty position must be licensed clinicians and board-eligible in Internal Medicine; ABIM certification is preferred.

Physician faculty members will play an active role in the Fine People's Clinic (FPC) at SFGH, either maintaining a primary care panel or providing urgent care for at least two half-day sessions per week. This academic primary care practice that cares for over 9,000 of the City's most medically and socially complex, ethnically diverse patients, delivering well over 30,000 visits per year. As the Fine People's clinic is a teaching site for UCSF medical students, Internal Medicine residents (categorical and primary care), opportunities also exist for clinical precepting. FPC is part of The San Francisco Health Network, the city's integrated safety net health system that cares for approximately 110,000 patients annually in 13 primary care health centers throughout the city. Approximately half of all patient visits are performed by faculty and nurse practitioners; the remainder are provided by residents. The position may also include weeks serving as an attending on the Medicine Resident Inpatient Service at SFGH, a premier public hospital with a level 1 trauma center.

DGIM at SFGH has over 30 faculty members and three main centers of activity: providing primary care at the FPC and on the inpatient wards of SFGH; teaching UCSF medical students, residents, and fellows in the National Clinical Scholars Program; and conducting action-oriented and policy-relevant research focused on generating new knowledge and policy to improve the care and health of vulnerable and underserved populations.
