Job Summary
The International Scholar Advisor position primarily focuses on compliance with federal immigration laws and regulations governing J-1, H-1b, TN and E-3 visas for UCSF Exchange Visitors and academic employees. The position will provide analysis and solutions for complex immigration issues pertaining to academic employment cases. The International Scholar Adviser will be responsible for advising UCSF Exchange Visitors and academic employees, their host departments, and Human Resources on immigration laws and regulations governing to J-1, H-1b, TN and E-3 visas.
Position represents UCSF to federal government agencies as an Alternant Responsible Officer as signatory and campus contact for I-129 based employment petitions with the Department of State (DoS) and signatory on H-1b, TN and E-3 petitions to Department of Labor (DoL) and the United States Citizen and Immigration Service (USCIS). The Adviser also analyzes application trends, regulatory changes and assists in unit policy planning through recommendations to the Employment Visa team and Director.
The International Scholar Adviser also serves as backup to the Lead Immigration Adviser's data management responsibilities.
The International Scholar Adviser will mange the ISSM and ISD systems in the absence of the Lead Immigration Adviser, assist with system upgrades and troubleshooting system errors working with external Campus partners and product developer Ellucian.
Finally the International Scholar Adviser will develop and lead immigration, social and professional programs for UCSF International Scholars. This position will also contribute to the programming needs of the International Students and Scholar Office and SAA/Grad Division through developing and leading programs based on the needs of the UCSF international student and scholar population.
This position requires advanced understanding of immigration laws and regulations pertaining to academic immigration with the ability to independently research relevant laws and policies and as well as apply them to the unique immigration needs of the scholar, host department and UCSF.
This position also requires experience in managing the Ellucian International Student and Scholar Management (ISSM) data system, serving as backup data manager to the Lead Immigration adviser.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
The International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) provides immigration related services to international students, researchers, faculty, staff and administration, and serves as the center of the international community at UCSF. These services include developing inbound international mobility strategies and policies for the University, preparing immigration documents while ensuring adherence to pertinent government regulations, liaising with cognizant US government agencies, advising the international community on visa acquisition and compliance, collaboration with relevant UCSF departments, and creation of programs that enhance the international community experience.
