Job Summary

This is a training position. Interns will be enrolled in a state-approved training program for the Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist (CHS). ()
While enrolled in the program, the Intern will be trained to perform:

  • HLA typing by serological and molecular methods
  • cadaver and living donor work-up to include crossmatch by cytotoxic and flow cytometry methods
  • engraftment testing by STR
  • antibody screening by various methods
  • and other procedures that are performed by licensed histocompatibility personnel.
  • Other duties include
    • preparing standardized trays for HLA typing
    • sorting patient sera for storage
    • perform QC and maintenance on various laboratory equipment
    • inventory and order lab supplies
    • file laboratory reports
    • accession samples using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), etc.
Interns must satisfy the requirements of the state-approved training program for continuous enrollment. Employment beyond the training period is dependent upon the receipt of California license and availability of a CHS/CLS position at ITL.
This position will end 13 months from the start date.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus. The Department is comprised of seven divisions including Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery. The UCSF-ITL is a high complexity clinical laboratory that performs tests and provides services that support solid organ (kidney, heart, lung, liver, pancreas, islet, etc.) and hematopoietic stem cell (blood, marrow, cord blood, etc.) transplant programs. The laboratory is CLIA certified and is licensed by the states of California and New York. The lab is also certified as a free-standing-histocompatibility laboratory by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). The laboratory serves as a core laboratory for the NIH Immune Tolerance Network and provides support for several national clinical trials.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in life science, clinical science or appropriate scientific field
  • Relevant laboratory experience
  • Must meet the academic requirements to enroll in the training program
  • Must be able to work variable shifts as required by laboratory operations including weekends, nights and early mornings
  • Accurate and be able to process multiple samples without switches.
  • Be able to work with personal computers
  • Must be effective as a member of a team
  • Proven record of being reliable and be able to multi-task
  • Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Tidy and orderly

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with human samples
  • Experience with QC/QA/QS in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Working knowledge of antigens and genetics of the HLA system and be able to interpret results correctly
