Position description
The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Project Scientist in the Grantham Lab, in the area of coastal freshwater ecology.
The applicant will support research activities in the Grantham Lab that advance understanding of the ecology of coastal streams of northern California. Focal research areas shall include:
Quantifying the interactions between native salmon and non-native predators;
Measuring the effect of environmental conditions on species distributions and abundance;
Measuring and modeling the trophic interactions and food webs which support salmon;
Integrating findings on fish and river ecology into recovery and conservation efforts.
Research tasks will involve data collection in field and experimental studies, including sampling of freshwater fish and aquatic invertebrates and measurement of environmental parameters, including streamflow, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and other water quality indicators. The candidate is also expected to analyze environmental data using appropriate statistical methods and to present findings in written and oral formats. The candidate will contribute to original peer-reviewed publications, will present the results of research at professional societies and conferences, will contribute to proposals for extramural funding and to fulfilling funding reporting requirements, and will mentor students in the lab.
The candidate will collaborate with a network of scientists, conservationists, and the public to integrate scientific knowledge of river ecology in efforts to recover populations and build the resilience of coastal river ecosystems. Professional activities shall include participation in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their field.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) .
Preferred qualifications
At least three years of relevant research experience (including PhD research) working on rivers and streams in northern California
A record of publication in the area of freshwater ecosystem research and management
Expertise in freshwater fish monitoring and river science field methods
