Department: Student Retention Initiatives Department's Website: https://ualr.edu/studentsuccess Summary of Job Duties: The Extra Help/Peer Coach serves as an academic resource for students, providing guidance, support, and assistance to help them navigate college life successfully. They work directly with students to establish academic goals and identify potential barriers while fostering a supportive environment conducive to learning and personal growth. The Peer Coaches will work in the Ottenheimer Library Learning Commons from 9 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy. Qualifications: Required Education/Experience: Currently enrolled as a student at the UA Little Rock (Spring 2024 and plan to register for Fall 2024); Completion of 30 or more hours of coursework (sophomore standing or higher); Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75; Must be legally allowed to work in the U.S. Hours: The Peer Coaches will work in the Ottenheimer Library Learning Commons from 9 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday, fourteen weeks each semester (fall/spring). Preferred Education and/or Experience: Coaching/mentoring/teaching/or tutoring college students Knowledge of academic success skills Job Duties and Responsibilities: Meet one-on-one with students in person or virtually for one or two sessions per week as scheduled through TracCloud; Attend required monthly training sessions (paid) in the Learning Commons; Peer Coaches are physically located in the Learning Commons; Maintain accurate documentation of student meetings; Provide updates to the AARO Coaching Coordinator regarding students’ progress; Assess student’s needs and develop an individual plan to provide personalized support; Comply with FERPA requirements to maintain the confidentiality of student records; Communicate any training needs and/or student concerns to the AARO Coaching Coordinator; Assist with program outreach and/or workshops as requested by AARO Coaching Coordinator Perform other duties assigned by the AARO Coaching Coordinator; Peer Coaches must be available to work at least four hours per week during hours of operation from 9 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday, in the Learning Commons; Peer Coaching starts the second week of each semester and goes until Week 15 of the semester. (No peer coaching the first week of classes and the last week of classes and finals.). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of establishing trust & rapport to create an environment where students feel safe to share their personal challenges and concerns; Knowledge of study strategies, goal setting, organizational skills & time management skills; Knowledge of individual learning styles and needs; Demonstrate active listening: engage with students’ perspectives, emotions, and concerns to understand their viewpoints thoroughly; Demonstrate positive communication: convey messages with optimism, clarity, and empathy to foster mutual understanding and collaboration with students; Demonstrate ethics and integrity: demonstrate honesty and accountability in actions and decisions, maintaining trust and credibility. Ability to provide feedback: Offer constructive comments and insights aimed at improving academic performance in a supportive and respectful manner; Ability to reframe thinking for positive outcomes; Ability to work one-on-one or in small groups with students; Ability to ask powerful questions to pose thought-provoking inquiries that stimulate critical thinking, self-reflection, and deeper insights into students' issues or challenges.
