Description

General Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Human Resources-Compensation and Benefits, the Director, Compensation administers compensation programs for UAB Medicine. Develops and implements compensation policies, practices, programs, and guidelines and ensures their consistent application and compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and laws. Provides coaching, development, direction, and oversight to a staff of compensation analysts. Advises and assists leaders at all levels of the organization with addressing compensation needs utilizing sound compensation principles.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

1. Oversees the daily operations of the compensation function: manages the overall job evaluation and wage and salary management programs for UAB Medicine; manages the workflow process, assigning and reviewing the work of departmental personnel; maintains appropriate office operations and standard operating procedures; manages and coaches professional employees and is accountable for performance and results of the compensation team.

2. Oversees market analyses and calculation of market adjustment costs: conducts as needed, periodic or annual market reviews of UAB Medicine positions; advises leadership regarding priority ranking of market adjustment implementations; provides budget recommendations for market adjustments in upcoming years or at time of anticipated implementation.

3. Manages various compensation-related projects, including revision and/or re-design of existing compensation programs; ensures compensation programs are internally equitable and externally competitive in order to attract, motivate and retain qualified individuals as well as compliant with all laws and UAB Medicine policies and procedures.

4. Oversees annual/ongoing compensation-related functions, including but not limited to: market pricicing analysis, software/system management, maintenance and development of job descriptions, job families, organizational structures, processing leader incentives such as LAIP (Leader Annual Incentive Plan), staff incentives such as Sharing in Success or similar programs, and merit increase process for staff.

5. Assists with the creative development of a variety of retention and recruitment initiatives related to career ladders, career paths, sign on/retention bonuses, shift differentials, premium pay, and the like to ensure that UAB Medicine remains competitive and a best place to work.

6. Assists with functions associated with Executive Compensation, including the annual At Risk Compensation (ARC) process for senior leaders in the organization and working with external compensation consultants as needed.

7. May assist with functions associated with annual review of physician compensation and preparing materials for the Board.

8. May oversee and/or participate in IT-related systems work that affects compensation such as market data systems, job description databases, workflow processes, and any others that may be identified.

9. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or a related field, and five (5) years of experience in Compensation required. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required. Experience in a health care setting strongly preferred. Supervisory experience preferred.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations

PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP and/or CCP certification preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Approximately four (4) to six (6) direct reports.

Budget Responsibilities

Management of funds with signatory and/or budget authority.
