The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Lab Manager.

Applications will be accepted until 04/03/2024.

Our lab is focused on the development of nanoengineered materials and applied toward various applications. Currently research activities mainly focus on development of next generation gas and electrochemical sensors for biomedical applications. The individual hired for this position will perform routine sensing experiments and materials synthesis. Additionally, other activities include drafting reports, maintaining lab equipment and inventories/restocking materials and supplies, managing group calendar and meetings. This position will provide work experience in analytical chemistry and materials science and engineering. The lab manager will be expected to participate in activities including, but not limited to, operating and maintaining sensing systems, organizing, data collection and analysis, materials and sensor preparation.

Responsibilities will also include lab management such as ordering supplies and maintenance of lab equipment, managing calendar and group meetings, leading the lab safety, and supervising students in the lab as they learn lab techniques and perform research experiments.

Please note that this is a 1-year limited-term position with possible renewal dependent upon funding.
Minimum Qualifications:
Physical requirements: Experience working with chemical, and biological hazards. Position duties might require standing for much of the work day
Education: Bachelors degree (4 years)
Experience: 6 to 12 months
Degree (Knowledge): Science or Engineering preferred
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with analytical and materials chemistry. Experience with materials and chemical characterization including scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR, X-ray diffraction will be plus.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to handle various chemicals and materials, some hazardous.
Proven ability to manage/oversee laboratory, including laboratory personnel and supplies, coordinate research projects, train personnel on research techniques and use of laboratory equipment and computer systems. Skill in operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment such as scanning electron microscopes and X-ray diffractometer. Ability to recognize and take appropriate measures to correct safety measures. Knowledge of EH&S procedure for laboratory safety.
Experience with personal computers. Ability to use database and spreadsheet software. Knowledge of computer applications, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to work with and learn new software for analysis.
Demonstrated ability to write and/ or assist with writing of manuscripts for publication. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.
Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work in a laboratory environment which interacts with a large number of research and technical personnel and other laboratories. Ability and willingness to work independently and/or in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community.
Demonstrated experience and ability to perform standard repetitive techniques that may be required in research protocols related to specific labs. Ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Ability in following step-wise experimental protocols. Skill to troubleshoot adaptations of experimental protocols.
