Job Summary
The Poison Information Specialist (SPI) serves as a resource for poisoning, drug, environmental, and medical information for the public and health care professionals. Provides advanced professional services by answering questions from health professionals and the public through a 24-hour statewide hotline. Makes diagnostic decisions and recommendations regarding treatment. Provides educational services to health care professionals and the public about poison prevention.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Work Experience:
One year of hospital based acute care experience required; nursing experience in critical care or emergency preferred. Work experience in a Poison Center is preferred.
Licensure/Registration/Certification
Current RN License to practice in the State of Texas;
A certified specialist in Poison Information is required.
Certified Specialist in Poison Information from the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) required; or obtained within two attempts once minimum exam eligibility requirements* are met; not to exceed three years from date of hire.
*Minimum eligibility requirements for examination are 2000 worked hours as an SPI and 2000 human exposure cases handled.
Education and Training:
Associate’s degree in Nursing, BSN preferred.
