Summary
Provides integrated career counseling, academic advising and educational counseling for undeclared and other targeted undergraduate students served by the Student Success Center; develops strategic plans to enhance student learning and empower students to successfully enter majors, meet degree requirements and persist to graduation.
Job Duties
1.Provides integrated career counseling, educational counseling, and academic advising for students served by the Student Success Center, meeting with all assigned students each semester to explore career goals and related majors, establish academic plans, explain university policies and procedures, connect students to relevant resources, and provide support through transitions.
2.Utilizes tracking system and other resources for early identification of at-risk students and recommends success strategies, services, and resources.
3.Assesses individual student needs, making appropriate referrals to other campus services and resources as needed, and aids students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals.
4.Maintains records documenting counseling and advising sessions including meeting overviews, progress notes, referrals, and follow up activities.
5.Monitors students¿ academic performance, progress toward entrance into majors and degree completion, providing or recommending interventions as needed.
6.Assists with developing and conducting orientation sessions for incoming Exploratory Studies students.
7.Establishes and maintains positive relationships with colleges to promote effective partnerships in preparing undeclared and transitional students considering major selections or changes.
8.Assists with the design and delivery of student success workshops for undergraduate students.
9.Assists with the development of college success and major and career exploration resources.
10.Acquires and maintains an awareness of new developments and best practices in academic advising, career counseling, and educational counseling, incorporating such knowledge into advising practices.
11.Maintains knowledge of University of Houston majors, campus resources, information systems, and University and college department policies and procedures.
12.Performs other job related duties as required.

Description

The Student Success Advocate provides academic support, coaching, and guidance to medical students through the development of strong academic and executive functioning skills, test prep and study strategies, task prioritization, and time management skills. Supports students 1:1 and small group coaching sessions, workshops, and through the creation of relevant resources. Reports directly to the Director of Academic Support within the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine.

1. Manages medical student academic support needs to ensure the Office of Academic Support in the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine provides quality service.

2. Develop and lead program specific workshops to support a range of academic and executive functioning skills.

3. Maintain accurate records about student academic coaching sessions, student service use, and academic skills presentation and workshop attendance.

4. Proactively reach out to, monitor, and assist students who are on academic watch and warning, leave of absence, and returning students.

5. Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop programs, services or opportunities to support the success of returning students.

6. Track retention, attrition, and completion data, student engagement in academic support initiatives, and related student support activities.

7. Meet with and advise students who request assistance with LOA, accessibility services, or other academic concerns.

8. Performs other job-related duties as required.

Qualifications

Masters and 1 year of experience supporting neuro-divergent learners. (3 years of experience preferred)

Education: Requires application of advanced principles, techniques and theory in a professional discipline or a thorough general business management knowledge. Knowledge of this level typically obtained through a directly job-related Master's degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Experience: Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience. Certification/Licensing: None.

Salary: 3,881.00 - 5,047.00
