Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS PERMANENT:
  • Candidates must be current state employees and have a reachable score on the Payroll Examiner 1 list; or
  • Have a current permanent appointment with 1 year of service as a Payroll Examiner 1, or as a title eligible for transfer to Payroll Examiner 1; or
  • Have an appointment as Payroll Examiner 1 here at UAlbany with less than 1 year of service (remainder of probationary period to be completed in new assignment); or
  • Be a former state employee eligible for reinstatement to the title of Payroll Examiner 1
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS PROVISIONAL PENDING EXAM
You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had ONE YEAR of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows:
Either A. as a Payroll Assistant
Or B. in a clerical, keyboarding, or paraprofessional* title allocated to Grade 9 or higher. Qualifying titles are available at: https://www.cs.ny.gov/examannouncements/announcements/37845titles.cfm.
May be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment.

Duties Description

The Payroll Examiner 1 supports the Payroll office by entering the employment transactions for all classified ANN staff, hourly staff, professional and classified. The payroll examiner is also responsible for managing and entering all employees on the student payrolls, ie: graduate and teaching assistants, student assistants, and college work study employees. While the responsibility to enter most professional transactions, currently falls in Human Resources, the Payroll Examiner will be responsible for to understand, calculate, adjust, and enter additional pay factors for faculty, monitor transactions for payroll actions, send appropriate correspondence and documentation to auditors and assist in SUNYHR and PayServ entry as needed. An understanding of the differing bargaining units, time and attendance rules, SUNY, OSC, Federal, State and campus regulations and polices are needed to accurately maintain our payrolls. A broad and thorough understanding of PayServ and SUNYHR are necessary to understand how transactions are communicated between our two systems.
