Position Overview:  

The Associate, Government Grants role is primarily responsible for supporting government giving and relationship management, providing grant-writing and grant coordination support to advance UWNYC’s strategic fundraising priorities through government funding on the City, State, and Federal level.

The Associate, Government Grants (AGG) will be responsible for supporting thoughtful, compelling applications for government funding opportunities, working collaboratively with key internal stakeholders to track and coordinate government grants on the City, State, and Federal levels, and working collaboratively with program staff to obtain data and monitor the impact of programs funded by government dollars. The AGR will also be responsible for tracking deadlines, entering data, and reporting results for all government giving, as well as monitoring new funding opportunities as resources are allocated and announced.

The successful candidate will be a strong writer and extremely organized with a high attention to detail. This is an ideal position for someone interested in government relations/ public affairs and learning the world of government grants. They must be comfortable working with external organizations and the offices of elected officials. They should be connected to United Way’s mission and inspired to enhance one of the country’s best-known nonprofit brands. They must be passionate about racial equity and social justice and motivated to break down racial inequities and barriers for low-income communities of color across New York City.

Primary Responsibilities:

Monitor and Identify Funding Opportunities
  • Monitor City, State, and Federal grant opportunities for alignment to UWNYC work.
  • Identify new prospective government funding opportunities.
  • Support the SDGR in maintaining a grants calendar that ensures all government funding deadlines are met with sufficient time for input, develop quarterly internal reports, and facilitate regular outreach to funders.
Grant Writing and Coordination
  • Draft letters of inquiry and intent to apply proposals.
  • Support writing of grant proposals/ applications, reports, and acknowledgment letters.
  • Schedule internal application coordination meetings and check-ins.
  • Organize internal shared document folders and storage.
  • Support SDGR with the tracking of all government funding opportunities to ensure that resources are secured to achieve growth targets for programmatic products.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Collect and organize documents to ensure compliance with all funder requirements working collaboratively with Operations, Finance, Legal & Compliance, and Administration.
  • Coordinate collaboration with program staff to inform proposals and reports.
  • Support collaboration with Marketing & Communications to develop and share impact content, highlight government partnerships, etc. 
Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Past internship or fellowship experience in a nonprofit or public affairs setting preferred
  • A sense of energy, ownership, and personal connection to the work of UWNYC, the communities we serve, and our staff
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Project manager skilled in cross-functional collaboration and coordination
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and quickly “change gears” as needed
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects with high attention to detail
  • Curiosity in understanding the government funding landscape
  • Possess positive, “can do” attitude

$55,000 - $65,000 a year
The final determination of salary, within this range, will depend on the candidate’s education, skills and experience required for the particular position.
