Role Summary: The United Nations International School (UNIS) seeks a Director of Arts who possesses an appreciation for and love of the arts, as well as an understanding of their importance in an educational program, to lead all elements of UNIS Visual and Performing Arts. This professional will be in charge of supporting the implementation of strategic plans connected to Visual and Performing Arts at UNIS and providing a clear focus on student learning and student achievement based on a holistic approach. The successful candidate will be committed to the growth and development of students, faculty and staff, and to the establishment of the UNIS Visual and Performing Arts program as a world class program. Reporting Relationship: The Director of Arts reports to the Chief Academic Officer. Essential Responsibilities: Academic Leadership for the Arts (Music, Film, Visual Arts, Theater)
Provide program leadership across the three divisions.
Develop, manage and implement large operating and capital budgets
Lead Music, Visual Art, Film and Theater Faculty in developing a realistic, workable yearlong program of units that accurately reflect the goals of the Visual and Performing Arts department.
Lead the department efforts in regard to planning, assessment and curriculum development.
Create opportunities for collaboration between departments within the arts and the MESH subjects.
Work with teachers to develop and enhance their personal practice.
Work closely with the CAO and Principals in order to ensure programs are reflective of school wide needs
Conduct multiple observations throughout the year of teaching staff and provide timely constructive evaluation feedback
Work closely with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction to ensure that required professional learning is budgeted and scheduled
Accurately assess program needs and arrange/deliver appropriate Professional Development opportunities
Keep abreast of current trends and developments in Visual and Performing Arts.
Communication
Communicate with departments and specialist teams regarding interdisciplinary matters and news.
In collaboration with the Communication Specialist expand use of approved social media to communicate with all stakeholders.
Maintain and communicate vision for ongoing improvement of teaching and learning in Visual and Performing Arts curriculum area.
Oversee and manage the collection, organization, and presentation of all data (assessment data, survey data, etc.) connected to strategic planning, school improvement, and academic programs
Serve as a liaison between administration, admissions, marketing, and parents to ensure all stakeholders develop an accurate understanding of the UNIS Visual and Performing Arts mission, vision, and academic and extracurricular offerings (excluding after school program).
Manage unified policies for all arts programs including extra-curricular for our students and families.
Work with the Director of Events to limit scheduling conflicts between performing arts programs and school schedules. Make sure that events/concerts/productions are distributed more evenly throughout the year.
Extracurricular Visual and Performing Arts programs
Oversee musicals, art events and exhibitions, plays and experimental theater
Develop and foster relationships with outside organization
Encourage outreach and travel performance opportunities/UN performance opportunities
Promote human rights/UN themed projects and help develop arts programs that further the mission of UNIS
Cultivate relationships with outside performing arts groups and NYC
Oversee visiting artists and performances.
Specific Qualifications and Skills
A minimum of 10-12 years of proven successful experience in the field of visual and performing arts, with a minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience
A minimum of 5 years administrative experience leading a department or organization
Experience as an IB Art, IB Film, IB Music or IB Theater teacher preferred
Experience in an International school setting or school with a highly developed Visual and Performing Arts program
Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
The ability to think creatively
The ability to problem solve under pressure

Proven organizational and technological skills
Qualifications in educational leadership
