Job Title: Research Analyst

Reports to: Special Assistant to the Executive Director
Job Location: San Diego, CA
Schedule: Full-time - Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Hybrid (In office/remote). Required to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Salary Range: $66,560.00 to $95,256.00 (depending on experience)

Job Summary:
As a Research Analyst, you will play a pivotal role in supporting UDW's mission by conducting in-depth research and analyses on priority initiatives led by the Executive Director’s office. Your responsibilities will include analyzing data to inform the development of effective advocacy campaigns, providing actionable insights to guide decision-making processes, and evaluating the impact of various programs on marginalized communities. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you will contribute to the design and implementation of research projects that advance worker rights and social justice causes. Your expertise in utilizing statistical analysis software, survey methodologies, and qualitative research methods will be essential in generating evidence-based recommendations for driving positive change within the union and broader community. This dynamic role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by harnessing the power of research to support inclusive and equitable practices in union organizing, community and civic engagement, and political activism.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on labor laws, regulations, and affecting workers' rights.
  • Analyze data related to political campaigns, turnout, and electoral to support political program efforts.
  • Assist with monitoring legislative proposals and policy changes that impact social justice issues and union organizing activities. Prepare research, briefs, presentations outlining key findings and recommendations decision-making.
  • Assist in designing surveys, questionnaires, and data collection methods to gather information from stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with union organizers to develop campaign strategies based on research insights and analysis.
  • Assist with evaluating the effectiveness of advocacy initiatives and community outreach programs through data-driven evaluations.
  • Stay informed on emerging trends in social justice movements, labor activism, and political management practices.
  • Support the development of training materials and resources for union members on advocacy and organizing.
  • Conduct interviews and focus groups with community members, union leaders, and other stakeholders to gather qualitative data.
  • Assist with identifying potential partnerships with other organizations, coalitions, or advocacy groups to amplify social justice efforts.
  • Assist in coordinating events, workshops, and public forums to raise awareness about UDW’s priority initiatives.
  • Create visual representations of data from research, such as charts, graphs, and infographics, to enhance understanding and engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Department to integrate research findings into messaging and storytelling.
  • Assist with monitoring media coverage and public opinion on labor-related topics and provide analysis to the Communications team and other decision-makers.
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, and working groups related to UDW’s key initiatives.
  • Support union growth and development efforts by providing research data and evidence of impact.
  • Assist in developing relationships with academic institutions and research partners to strengthen data collection and analysis capabilities.
  • Ensure compliance with research ethics guidelines and standards when collecting and handling sensitive information.
  • Contribute to the development of research methodologies and tools to improve data quality and reliability.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of evaluation frameworks to measure the outcomes of social justice programs.
  • Provide research findings and recommendations to support senior leadership in strategic decision-making.
  • Conduct comparative analyses and evaluations of labor practices, union structures, and political systems to identify lessons learned.
  • Manage databases and information systems to organize and maintain research data securely.
  • Support internal training sessions on research methodologies, data analysis techniques, and reporting standards.
  • Facilitate knowledge-sharing and learning exchanges among staff members to build research capacity.
  • Assist in preparing proposals, applications, and project reports in research-related initiatives.
  • Represent the organization at conferences, seminars, and networking events to share research insights and build partnerships.
  • Stay updated on relevant research publications, academic journals, and industry reports to inform ongoing work.
  • Contribute to a culture of learning, innovation, and continuous improvement within the organization's research initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in labor studies, political science, sociology, social work, or a related field.
  • 3-6 years’ experience in a research capacity within a labor union, advocacy organization, or political campaign.
  • 3-6 years’ experience working on issues related to worker rights, social justice, or political activism.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis software such as SPSS, R, or STATA for data processing and interpretation.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing research projects from inception to delivery of findings.
  • Strong communication skills to research findings to diverse audiences in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Knowledge of survey design methodologies, sampling techniques, and qualitative research methods.
  • Understanding of grassroots organizing principles and strategies for community engagement.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Proficiency in using online tools for literature review, data collection, and project management.
  • Proficiency in using data visualization tools to present research findings in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Experience in grant writing, proposal development, and activities to support research initiatives.
  • Prior experience working with marginalized or vulnerable populations to ensure inclusive and equitable research practices.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying updated on trends in labor research, social justice advocacy, and political organizing.
  • Bilingual a plus.
Requirements:
  • Ability to work from UDW’s office three days/per week.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Travel in a reliable vehicle is required (about 10-20% a month).
