Description

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To support the vision, mission and guiding principles of the City.
  • While performing any procedure, all associates and contract personnel must observe applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental rules and guidelines. The use of appropriate personal protective equipment is required.
  • Attend and participate in training opportunities and seminars relevant to this position.
  • Adhere to appropriate City operating procedures, benefit rules, employment, and safety policies/practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains the appearance and cleanliness of all City Facilities.
  • Works with contractors for maintenance work on City buildings.
  • Receives and completes work orders related to building maintenance.
  • Performs basic electrical and plumbing work.
  • Sets up meeting room for all City Council meetings and other City functions.
  • Evaluates heating and air-conditioning units in City buildings.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair of city buildings and facilities.
  • Performs custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, stripping and waxing floors; dusting and polishing furniture; washing windows and woodwork; moving and assembling furniture; hanging signs and pictures; and cleaning restrooms.
  • Moves heavy furniture, equipment and boxes.
  • Sets-up and dismantle furniture and equipment.
  • Participates in monthly departmental safety meetings.
  • Properly secures city equipment to ensure employee and citizen safety.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with facility inspections for needed maintenance and repair to in adherence to safety codes.
  • Assist Supervisor in semi-skilled masonry, painting, carpentry, or related tasks in general maintenance of City facilities which requires skill in operation of a variety of hand and power tools.
  • May perform minor maintenance work on assigned equipment.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

JOB SCOPE

  • Job has recurring work situations involving moderate degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and procedures is high. Errors in judgment and execution will waste time and resources adversely impacting unit performance. Incumbent operates independently but work is verified by supervision.

This position consists of a variety of technical labor tasks performed in/on City buildings. The purpose of this position is to ensure that all maintenance work orders are completed throughout the City of Union City. Successful performance contributes to the efficient and effective maintenance of all City-owned buildings and grounds. Incumbent operates independently but results are monitored by the Building Maintenance Supervisor.

COMMUNICATIONS/CUSTOMER CONTACT

Contacts are across the entire City community and in a service capacity. Community contact is a critical component of success in developing good will and support of City programs and initiatives.

COMPETENCIES/SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE OR TRAINING PREFERRED:

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Four years of experience in building maintenance and technical training
  • Must possess a valid State of Georgia Driver’s license
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow guidelines including City codes, departmental policies and procedures, State and Federal rules, OSHA laws, Georgia DOT rules and regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require some judgment and interpretation in application.
  • Considerable knowledge of building maintenance requirements;
  • Knowledge of various HVAC systems installation, repair and maintenance;
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to the installation, repair and maintenance of various electrical and mechanical control systems and devices;
  • Knowledge of locating and adjusting defects in electronic systems and equipment;
  • Considerable skill in electrical and plumbing tasks;
  • Considerable skill in carpentry;
  • Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools;
  • Ability to work independently to meet deadlines;
  • Ability to coordinate with contractors;
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks at one time;
  • Ability to evaluate a problem and identify solutions.

  • Frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the associate may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low.
