UNION CITY GEORGIA CITY OF is Hiring a Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Near Union, GA

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To support the vision, mission and guiding principles of the City.
  • While performing any procedure, all associates and contract personnel must observe applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental rules and guidelines. The use of appropriate personal protective equipment is required.
  • Attend and participate in training opportunities and seminars relevant to this position.
  • Adhere to appropriate City operating procedures, benefit rules, employment, and safety policies/practices.
  • The work consists of varied management, administrative, supervisory and technical duties. Personnel shortages contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a wide variety of innovative recreational programming to match Union City’s highly diverse and progressive population.
  • Incumbent must be able to work weekends and be on call

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies, and procedures; Supervise the implementation of approved policies and procedures;
  • Develop, organize, direct, promote and administer all athletic programs and special events for youth and adults. Prepare schedules for all athletic activities including league games and playoffs, and registration periods;
  • Direct, manage, and organize life enrichment activities including social events, hobbies, educational, and other activities for all ages;
  • Responsible for the department’s field maintenance program to include daily ballfield preparation for practices and games;
  • Determine material, equipment, facility, supervision, training or instructional needs for each activity or program and coordinate with other members of staff; Conduct or direct clinics for players, coaches, or parents on selected sports.
  • Respond to public inquiries about special events, athletic fields and gymnasiums for practice or games
  • Identify community needs, recommend appropriate programs and execute as directed;
  • Promote and publicize recreation programs and activities; prepare and supervise the development of program and event publicity, including flyers, brochures, news releases, etc.
  • Interview, hire, train, assign, supervise, evaluate and discipline personnel; assign work in terms of department goals and objectives; Direct, oversee, and participate in the development of the work plan for assigned areas; Assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
  • Prepare budget for assigned areas; assist in budget implementation; participate in the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; administer the approved budget;
  • Responsible for requisition inventory and management of equipment purchased for various activities;
  • Act as department liaison in working with citizen groups, schools, other governmental units, and contractors; meet with public groups, clubs, organizations, and agencies to explain and promote community services, activities, and programs that encourage community participation; Coordinate programs with school activities and community programs;
  • Maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the recreation field; incorporate new developments as appropriate into programs; provide opportunities for employee development through departmental meetings, outside training, and proper leadership;
  • Assist with all other duties as assigned;

JOB SCOPE

Job has recurring work situations involving high degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of available resources is high. Errors in judgment could cause disruptions to the City’s mission and adversely impact attainment of the City’s goals. Incumbent operates independently but the Parks and Recreation Director monitors results.

COMMUNICATIONS/CUSTOMER CONTACT

Contacts are across the entire City and community and are in a leadership capacity. Community contact is a critical component of success in developing good will and support of City programs and initiatives.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following areas is preferred (Recreation, Park Administration, Physical Education); Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree;
  • Eight years responsible experience in municipal government with at least five years in a supervisory or management position


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Interpreting and applying Parks and Recreation standards and City policies and procedures.
  • Able to coach as well as assign coaches for recreational activities
  • Assessing community needs and developing solutions.
  • Common recreational and social needs of various age groups.
  • Developing, coordinating and conducting recreation programs and activities.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the development and implementation of community services program.
  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating the work of professional, technical and clerical personnel.
  • Analyzing problems, identifying alternative solutions, projecting the consequences of proposed actions, and implementing recommendations in support of Department goals.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with City employees, officials, and representatives from other local, state and Federal agencies.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
