Umbra is Hiring a Senior Software Engineer - Full-Stack (Warden) Near Santa Barbara, CA

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to be a technical lead for Umbra's internal QA application known as Warden. The individual filling this position will collaborate with systems engineers, space-operations, and customer success to ensure that we have the tools to deliver the best products to our end-users. As a technical lead for the team you will have autonomy on execution and direction of Warden, working hand-in-hand with our product management team. This position can be located in Santa Barbara CA, Austin TX, or Fully Remote. Due to export restrictions, fully remote employees must live and work in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, test, and maintain Warden and other QA applications used by Umbra's systems engineers, space-operations, and customer-success teams to ensure Umbra is delivering the best data possible to our customers
  • Provide key software architecture expertise to cross-functional engineering and product teams
  • Help establish and adhere to DevOps practices that ensure that customer and satellite-operational needs are met with quality and performance

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 5 - 7 years of professional experience developing highly available web services with server-side scripting languages, preferably Python
  • 5 - 7 years of professional experience with modern SPA development frameworks/libraries, preferably recent experience with React
  • Experience building custom GIS applications, STAC, or other imagery catalog APIs
  • 3 - 5 years of experience designing, developing, testing intuitive and well documented commercial RESTful API
  • Demonstrated foundational understanding of software architecture, event-driven microservices, interface design, and automated testing patterns
  • 2 years of professional experience developing automated build and test pipelines in a CI/CD lifecycle
  • Experience with database-backed applications and relational database concepts, preferably Postgres
  • Solid understanding of cloud and application security, access control, and identity management
  • Good communications skills, ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, and willingness to learn new skills and technology
  • Experience developing Kubernetes/Docker containerized services

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing image processing/formation applications
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure monitoring principles, best practices, and implementation
  • Experience designing and documenting commercial APIs with Swagger/OpenAPI
