Umbra is Hiring a Remote Director, Business Development Global Remote Sensing

Umbra builds next-generation space systems that observe the Earth in unprecedented fidelity.

Our mission: Deliver global omniscience.

Umbra creates the highest quality synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data available commercially and serves a wide swath of customers, from the largest defense and intelligence agencies to the most nimble startups in the Earth observation sector globally.

Almost overnight, with the launch of our first two commercially viable satellites in January 2023, Umbra rocketed into commercial operations and is now one of the fastest growing companies in the satellite imagery industry.

To understand Umbra’s culture, and the modest degree to which we have built out our sales infrastructure to date, it’s important to note that our “overnight” success took more than seven years of patient, disciplined research and development to arrive at a satellite platform that is not only dominant in terms of capability, but also affordable and reliable to manufacture. We have raised less money than most of our competitors, hired fewer staff, and judge our progress with old-fashioned concepts like “profitability.” We are growing very efficiently compared to peers because we value partnership for distribution, prioritizing a few highly strategic accounts, and investing in technology to scale rather than headcount.

Going into 2024, we see an opportunity to press our advantage. We are struggling to keep pace with demand, and believe now is the time to evolve from a reactive sales process to a focused and strategic one.

In partnership with Umbra leadership, you will be responsible for spearheading our global data sales business. You will collaborate closely with our marketing, customer success, and technical staff chart a path to meeting our revenue projection for 2024 through a combination of growing existing accounts and bringing in new business. You will own the entire data sales pipeline, from qualification to close, for a global book of business that we believe is growing faster than any other satellite imagery provider in the industry.

In addition, you will lead a team responsible for outreach to our end-user community to ensure Umbra is increasingly included in the formation of US and NATO defense, intelligence and civil mission strategies. You will inform marketing and product strategy with evidence-based demand signal from your engagement with potential customers and end-users of our data across both our defense and commercial client base.
