UIC Alaska is Hiring a Subaquatic Vegetation Researcher Near Vicksburg, MS

Overview

SUBAQUATIC VEGETATION RESEARCHER (ELABS):

Bowhead seeks a Subaquatic Vegetation Researcher to support the Engineering Research Development Center Research Development Center located in Vicksburg, MS. The Subaquatic Vegetation Researcher will assist the Coastal Ecology Team, Wetlands and Coastal Ecology Branch, with a project aimed at developing nationwide functional assessments and tools for Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV).

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of a suite of materials focused on coastal resources and ecosystem restoration.
  • Assist with identifying and developing a regionalized framework for assessment method and tool development.
  • Evaluating existing assessment methodologies and tools.
  • Identifying species of SAV to include in a national assessment framework.
  • Reviewing and identifying functions of selected SAV species.
  • Supporting the development and management of a national multi-agency and multi-disciplinary team, supporting national interagency workshops,
  • Developing recommendations on stream assessment methods, mitigation, and monitoring.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in ecology, biology, geochemistry.
  • Two (2 ) years of experience and knowledge of aquatic and marine resource assessment and mitigation.
  • Experience in writing and/or reviewing technical reports and other peer-reviewed literature.
  • Familiarity with freshwater or marine habitats is a must, and SAV specifically would be a significant bonus.
  • Basic understanding of constructing conceptual models.
  • Background with statistics, R or Python proficiency.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in ecology, biology, geochemistry.
  • Fieldwork experience.
  • Matlab & Shiny app experience.
  • Experience in leading workshops, or a history of giving oral/poster scientific presentations is desired.

Physical Demands:

• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time• Must be able to twist, bend, and squat periodically

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a Public Trust (NAC) level clearance. US Citizenship is a requirement for this location.
