Responsibilities

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington provides comprehensive behavioral healthcare for adolescents, adults, and senior adults suffering from mental health and addictive illnesses. PIW is a 130 bed, short-term, acute care hospital offering inpatient, partial and intensive outpatient hospitalization, as well as specialized treatment programs for chemical dependency. PIW has an excellent reputation as an innovative hospital with caring, dedicated staff, experienced in the delivery of behavioral healthcare. Primary Duties:

  • Conducts screenings to understand the patient’s history of drug and/or alcohol use, treatment history, social service and other recovery support needs and motivation to change behavior.
  • Facilitates patient’s readiness for change and uses motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support and encourage the patient to plan for reduction or elimination of drug and alcohol use. Models coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Assists patients in setting personal recovery goals and developing recovery care plans.
  • Works with addiction treatment and recovery care team and patient to connect with community supports and treatment services to promote recovery.
  • Supports patients and families to understand how to access community resources.
  • Assists patients in linking to community supports and treatment services, including helping secure transportation and other resources.
  • Acts as a peer support during the inpatient stay, discharge planning and care transitions throughout the continuum of care.
  • Use technology applications, televideo and patient facing apps to maintain engagement with patients in various community settings.
  • Provides family and social support network members with education and recovery support materials.
  • Provides education on risks of overdose and assures that patient and significant others have naloxone and are trained to use.
  • Participates in trainings to continually gain new skills.
  • Attends required staff and other meetings.
  • Completes required documentation and other reports.
  • Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support.
  • Consults with nursing staff, social work as requested, even if patient does not screen positive.
  • Electronically reach out to treatment providers to verify patient showed up for appointment; and follow-up on all missed appointments
  • Participates in trainings to continually gain new skills.
  • Attends required staff and other meetings.
  • Completes required documentation and other reports.
  • Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support. Dress, speak and conduct yourself in an appropriate and professional manner at all times. Adheres to IT and business-related communications confidentiality policies.
  • Qualifications

    • High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
    • The candidate must be actively engaged in his/her own recovery with a minimum of two years demonstrated personal recovery experience from alcohol and/or drug use.
    • The incumbent must be able to read, interpret documents and write routine reports.
    • Basic computer skills are required. The Coach must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to patients and health professionals, as well as good problem-solving skills.
    • Must demonstrate a willingness to learn and an interest in acquiring new skills.
    • The incumbent should have a minimum of two years of professional experience in a substance use disorder setting providing peer support/navigation; Certified Peer Specialist Certification or completion of certification within 12 months of hire..
    • Must have knowledge of recovery support systems, including but not limited to, inpatient Residential Treatment Programs, IOP, outpatient MAT and community based support groups; and providing direct service; Experience or a working knowledge of the criminal justice system is a plus. Reliable transportation and valid drivers license preferred
    • Candidates must meet the company’s hiring criteria to include a pre-employment verifications, background investigation and drug test.
