Highlands Behavioral Health System is an 86 bed, acute care psychiatric hospital located in Littleton, CO. Highlands features individual units for adolescents, adults, and seniors, and offers inpatient acute care, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs. www.highlandsbhs.com

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Intake RN, under the supervision of the Intake Director, provides telephonic and in-person risk assessment to assist the physician in identification of appropriate level of care for potential patients. The Intake RN is the initial contact with referral sources and potential patients, coordinates the referral and intake process, facilitates the admission process and maintains communication with referral sources, families, patients, and unit staff. The Intake RN works with the Business Office regarding patient financial data and verification and prior authorization of insurance benefits as needed, as well as with the UR Department for the certification of patients admitted.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Assess and identify developmental and behavioral functioning of the patient. Document patient responses
  • Answers telephone using the appropriate greeting and attempts to obtain all pertinent clinical, demographic and insurance information from the caller to determine caller’s needs.
  • Performs telephonic risk screening to determine level of suicidality/homicidality with caller in crisis.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of admission criteria for inpatient and outpatient levels of care and can recommend appropriate service recommendations for each individual. Provides referral recommendations to appropriate resources whenever a caller is not appropriate for services.
  • Schedules assessments with potential patients and referral sources and explains the assessment/admission process.
  • Promptly greets patient and family upon notification of their arrival. Informs patient and family of evaluation and admission process.
  • Conducts walk-in and scheduled assessments, coordinates with the reviewing psychiatrist, and makes appropriate clinical recommendations for the individual seeking care. Conducts assessments for pre-accepted patient transfers (direct admits) coming from hospitals and other approved referral sources.
  • Identifies potential problematic disposition cases, including placement problems, medical needs, or developmental delays, and seeks supervision prior to acceptance.
  • Develop an effective working relationship with patient and/or family.
  • Comply with required standards for medical/legal reporting situations (i.e., child abuse, dependent adult abuse, psychiatric commitment).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of voluntary admission and involuntary procedures for court commitment.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Education: Graduate from an accredited program of professional nursing required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Experience: 2-3 years in substance abuse/psychiatric treatment programs, including experience in intake/admissions and managed care preferred.
  • Licensure: Currently licensed to practice by the Colorado State Board of Nursing.
  • Additional Requirements: CPR certification, Handle with Care and Verbal De-Escalation training within 30 days of employment prior to assisting in a restraining procedure. Must be able to pass a competency exam for the area upon hire. May be required to work flexible hours, weekends, and overtime.

  • Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;
  • Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads an work assignments on a constant basis;
  • Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.
