Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs.  Newport News has an on-site certified school, art and music therapists, and vocational programming.  Newport News, VA is a beautiful seaside city, rich in maritime history and conveniently located to DC and other major North Eastern cities.

Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

The LPN implements nursing care for assigned residents.  The LPN assists in the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of nursing care under the direction of the DON according to standards of practice.  The LPN utilizes advanced skills in patient care after education and training.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing program for Licensed Practical Nurses and hold a valid license in the state of Virginia to practice as an LPN.  Current CPR certification or upon hire attend CPR certification.  Prefer a minimum of one year experience in an adolescent psychiatric or general psychiatric setting. Requires mental alertness; at times requires critical thinking under stress situations.  Requires stamina to work in a fast-paced environment. Must complete APIC Epidemiology courses EPI 101 and 102 infection preventionist (IP) model competency within 1 year.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

                                     

  • Ensures that proper consent forms are obtained indicating both parental/guardian consent and a physician order for the immunizations ordered.
  • Notifies health department in all cases of reportable diseases.
  • Conducts health education for residents and staff.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment by adhering to safety and security regulations, properly using and storing supplies, and reporting potential hazards.
  • Conducts annual TB screenings of facility employees
  • Educates residents/guardians on vaccinations prior to administration (e.g., Vaccine Information Statement).
  • Monitors the proper storage of all vaccinations.
  • Facilitates Infection Control meetings quarterly.
  • Administers vaccinations to all residents as mandated by VVFC (Virginia Vaccines for Children) ensuring that consents are obtained prior to administration.
  • Adheres to all CDC guidelines for residential treatment facilities.
  • Works as unit LPN if requested by Director of Nursing/Nursing Supervisor.
  • Administers Hepatitis B injections to employees as requested.
  • Tallies infection rates/nosocomial infections and reports findings to Infection Control Committee and Medical Staff.
  • Take proactive role to reduce risk of infection rates in residents and staff.
  • Facilitates orientation on Infection Control to new employees.
  • Facilitates monthly infection control rounds.
  • Coordinate and schedule appointment requests that are received from the physicians.
  • Demonstrate a high level of customer service and be unfailingly courteous and helpful when speaking customers.             

 

 

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Attends in-service training seminars and workshops and maintains an accurate record of attendance.
  • Participates in nursing PI activities by collecting data or performing duties as requested by the Director of Nursing/Nursing Supervisor.
  • Employee will follow safety guidelines and work safely.
  • Ensure transportation is set-up for all outside appointments.
  • Ensure any follow-up appointments are scheduled and communicated.
  • Assist with inside appointments i.e., NP visits or MD visits.
